Coming to terms that BYU isn't getting into a big conference has been harder for me than coming to terms that the BoM is not a historical account of real events
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
I had an epic troll with him. I don't remember much about the details, but the topic of church came up and I went out and found some guys 50-page dissertation on the Abomination of Desolation and posted it as my response to him (at the time, I'm sure it was the longest post in CB history). He had to have spent 4 hours at least reading the whole thing (this started at like 10:00 at night) and then ended up going through line-by-line and answering my post. I think by the time he actually responded to it was after 4:00 in the morning. After he hit "post" he couldn't find his post because the thread above him had been deleted. He went postal on El Jefe.
I remember few CB trolls, but that one for me was one of my favorite. That guy was an idiot.
I remember that one. Your response was all the more epic because he actually felt the need to respond. So much win.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

I think I remember that one too.

Sounds like being in the P5 will get more expensive for the schools if they are going to provide more money to players and travel allowances for family. Good thing they get all that TV money to pay for the increased costs. They are almost to semi-pro.

This can't be a sound business model.

Leagues outside the Power Five can opt to adopt the same rules. Of course, many schools won't be able to afford measures like cost-of-attendance. That could create an even larger competitive imbalance between schools in the power conferences and those in leagues like the Sun Belt, MAC or even in the FCS.
"There is a risk the gap will grow; I think we ought to be candid about that," Rice president David W. Leebron said. "We're in a world of radically different resources. But those schools with more resources ... will have some ability to spend those resources in ways that are actually more rational, particularly with a priority on student-athlete welfare."
I imagine BYU has the resources and would opt to follow suit with the P5 if possible. As an independent, it seems it would be an internal decision regarding football. Regarding men's basketball, though, I'm not sure the WCC is a lock to choose the more expensive path.
BYU should opt to adopt the P5 player stipend and then double it. How's that for autonomy?
That would definitely make them competitive.
The great thing about giving these kids several thousand dollars a year is that now all of them will have money throughout the entire school year and won't have to worry about running out of cash.

Now more of them will be able to afford their own tattoos and the current game jersey/bowl ring for ink model can die.
As for the impact on BYU, Mendenhall acknowledged that he's spoken about it with BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe. "From early discussions (with) Tom, our intention will be to provide what myself and he believe are worth following and will pursue those things that have true and real value to our student-athletes and to BYU. His intent, as he's passed it to me, if you look at the world of chasing the Big 5, I think we'll chase what's appropriate and we'll provide everything possible that will benefit our student-athletes, not only on the field but off. But also within reason," Mendenhall said.

LOL.
There was a large football player who lived across the hall from me in Helaman Halls. In addition to the training table, he had dining plus (a new feature at the time) on his id card. I distinctly remember him many times walking the hall asking if anyone had any money left on their dining plus, and coming home just before midnight to find him in the lobby waiting by the vending machines for the clock to strike midnight so his card would reload with 10 bucks and he could buy more Big Bopper ice cream sandwiches. I imagine the new stipend payments will be similar on a larger scale.
