  • 2012 Heisman Memorial Trophy watch thread

It's Matt Barkley's to lose and he did nothing Saturday to hurt his chances, but there were a few other performances that were impressive. Le'Veon Bell was particularly impressive beating Boise nearly by himself. Geno Smith put up ridiculous numbers against an overmatched Marshall team. Braxton Miller could be a darkhorse guy in UM's offense.

Taylor Martinez of Nebraska went 26-34 (76.5%) for 354 yds and 5 TDs with no picks for a QB rating of 212.5.

Also Buckeye fans will be surprised to learn that Braxton Miller now plays for Michigan. Nebraska has both OSU and Michigan on it's schedule so why not face Denard Robinson and Braxton Miller in the same game? Or were they traded? BTW, I don't think we've heard the last from Robinson despite his off night against Alabama.

I don't think Taylor Martinez will be a serious Heisman candidate in 2012. But he did have a very good game against Southern Miss. Consistency has been a problem for him. In his Freshamn year in 2010, he blew up Oklahoma St. to the tune of 23-35 (65.7%) for 323 yds and 5 TDs with no picks (also had 100+ rushing yards). It was short lived but he did sustain an injury the following week. Anyway, if Martinez continues to play well and show consistency than maybe he's a more serious Heisman contender in 2013 when he's a senior. Martinez will have his moments in the spotlight when Nebraska plays Wisconsin, Ohio St., and Michigan this year. Will he have a night similar to Robinson against Alabama, or more at home, like he had at Wisconsin in 2011; or will he shine?

Nice call re: Martinez. I probably should have mentioned Travis Wilson's stellar performance as well - didn't miss a beat sans Petrino. It will be interesting to see what these guys do once the competition ramps up.

7 touches, 3 scores. Should have been 8 touches, 4 scores, silly penalty. Crash course is set, November 3rd, 2012!

I haven't watched a Heisman award show in at least 15 years.

You should think of this thread as the 2012 Best College Football Player watch thread.

I agree for awards, I'm fine with him getting really limited touches until the meat of the schedule in mid-October though.

No question. As long as they're beating up on people, 8-12 touches is probably about right. Heaven knows that team has plenty of weapons.

DAT-D says 10 touches 222 yards 2 scores, and dropped the ball into the end zone on what should have been TD 3, kindly allowing a lineman blocking downfield to score a rare touchdown.

He is awesome and the mullet coach knows how to use him. He can earn a major bump to the top of people's ballots in a couple weeks against Oklahoma.

I do not look forward to playing this team.
