  • Dear Elder Eyring

Being a Mormon is not always the most fun. BYU BB and FB is about all some of us have in the way of hobby and fun.

We're awkward at work dinner parties. Our women can't wear the latest fashions. We give up our Sundays. We give our extra money to the church. Having so many kids and with our wives (edit: haha WIVES) tied up watching them all day, we don't have any extra money to begin with. We pissed off all our neighbors with Prop 8. We give up Saturday mornings to move everybody in and out or help them plant sod. We don't need one more sacrifice. We're offering a lot.

Other college students are doing jello shots off the sorority girls. Ours are bowling at Fat Cats and getting to bed early. BYU FB and BB is a bright spot for them.

The world knows we're different. They know we sacrifice a lot. We don't need one more example to prove to everyone how righteous we are. They get it.

Let us have our BYU sports. Please.

    With love,
    Jay Santos

PS if you say no, I'm going to make a snide comment about the brethren in my next Gospel Doctrine class. Think about the consequences.

Didn't know that. If so, might explain some things.

His brother taught at the U for a long time but I don't thing Mr. Slate has any connections to the school

We've got two ALUF's (HBH and COS) running BYU athletics, and we wonder why we're doing some of the things we're doing.

Do you mean Ed? He's still there. A brilliant, soft spoken, saint of a man.

Yes. Though Hank B. has many ties to Utah, I was thinking of the other one, of whom Sterling McMurrin charged that he was denied a Nobel Prize simply because of his religion.

                His dad?
I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

That was Henry Eyring (their father), not Ted (his brother). (though Ted is a brilliant chemist in his own right)

I think McMurrin is off base on this one as well. The whole scope of his work on Rates of Reactions and Quantum Mechanics wasn't fully appreciated and recognized as groundbreaking until many years had passed, at which time it was beyond the relavent time period to qualify for the reward. I spent many long hours over several years in the Henry Eyring Building when I was at the U.

SM may as well say Henry Eyring was denied the Nobel Prize because he was Mexican (by place of birth).
