  • Boylen wins his first championship and nary a mention from Seattle Ute?

Yeah thats right... Utah won the glen wilkes tournament.

They beat UW wisconsin (probable tournament team)
    Ole Miss (probable tournament team)
    Morgan st (probable tournament team)

Maybe that SW baptist was an anomaly

I have a special gift for sizing up coaches. Go and do searches on utefans and you'll see me predicting greatness for Whit after last year's UNLV debacle and taking on posters on the subject like a James Bond action scene. On the other hand, I was hopeful but never a believer in Giacoletti. After giving him a chance for a year and a half after the first strong year with Majerus' players I said that's enough. It's really not rocket science. You watch the attention to detail and ethos of excellence or not when times are bad, regardless of wins, and the recruiting reports.

Re Boylen, I've said it before and I'll say it again. He's a keeper. I saw last year that with a lot of adversity and a team that was lacking in myriad ways he put a tough, disciplined team on the floor. I didn't care about the SW Baptist loss, because I look at the big picture. Not only are his teams defense oriented and hard nosed, he's recruiting maybe better than Majerus ever did. (Majerus didn't ever have big recruiting years in terms of magazine ratings; he had a genius for spotting diamonds in the rough and grinding them and polishing them to a luster.) Starting two years from now when the current freshmen are Juniors or sophomores (if redshirted) and the 09 class are sophomores, it's going to start all coming together and getting really ugly for the rest of the conference.

I think it was an anomaly. Regardless, I won't be surprised if the Utes are up and down this year, and I continue to expect great things from Boylen in the future. Does SW Baptist really not count for RPI?

SW Baptist doesn't count for RPI because it is not a Division I school. The Utes dodged an early bullet.

So it goes both ways. Excellent.

In Utefans chat Rocky tried to convince me it did count.

Yep your biggest win of the year against Wisconsin Green Bay looks even bigger because they lost the next night to Rollins college but that does not count either.

RPI rankings for today in hoops:

The Utes record shows the loss to SW Baptist, but fortunately for Utah, only games against Division I teams count.
