In rewatching some of the NM Bowl I've been paying more attention to Hoffman.

Before this year started I was worried that Hoff might be another internet legend. The one thing that people kept saying about him (I prolly saw this about 20 times) was "he looks the part." Great. He looks liked a tall, muscular black man. Combining that useless info with the fact that he only got one offer and it was Sac State and I was skeptical, in spite of the "he came from a remote hamlet" explanation for why he wasn't recruited. Given that the last WR we had with offers from BYU and Sac State and no others was the short, pudgy Jewish kid who got run out of town for sucking at football and drinking coffee, I wasn't holding out the highest hopes for Hoffman Hegemony.

But he's won me over in increments this year and I think I'm ready to ride the hype wagon so here goes. He is fast. This has surprised me. Not blazing speed, but good speed combined with good body control. He strides long but he's actually pretty agile in traffic. His athleticism is legit - dude showed he can get up high.

He's also really just learning. He's got max two years of serious coaching behind him at this point, but he's already learning to use his body and height advantage and he'll get a lot better at that.

Summary: I think his ceiling is high. By the time he's a junior he has a chance to be a dominant WR.

I agree, I think he took a bit of a step back in the utah game with the way he let Burton manhandle him but he will only get better.

Here is the same arm last year when he was red shirting:

I guess BYU no longer frowns on tattoos?

I like him but I don't trust his hands. They're not horrible, they're just not great.

I'd venture to guess that they probably frown upon them, they just don't expel people who get them. Sounds pretty reasonable.

I don't remember hearing much internet hype, but maybe I was just oblivious to it. Watching him this year he shocked me in a sort "where did that guy come from" sort of way than anything else.

He sure did look good in the bowl game. The catch he made when Jake made that high throw on the run was a seriously athletic play.

Can't wait to see him and Apo on the field at the same time next year. One of my biggest disappointments in this season was having Apo out and not getting to see reps and get his feet wet with the rest of the freshman crew.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

That's the slippery slope to accepting players who live in one-parent house holds.

Last year while he was red shirting he was being hyped to no end, getting rave reviews from people. For once it seems to have been warranted.

Wrubell talked about him all year.

Why do the players wear that band around their bicep? What function does it serve?

It makes your bicep bigger because of the blood flow. That is the only reason players wear it like that.

I always thought it was to make your biceps look bigger:

Is there an intended use for it, though? Or is it simply the football equivalent of handwoven friendship bracelets (simply for show)?

When Iverson started wearing that ridiculous pair of nylons on his arm, I thought it looked silly. Now even Carmelo wears one. I guess playas gotta get their groove on somehow.

                            It is all for show.

Another thing that is silly is only having one sleeve in football as well. Pure silliness right there.

                              That is lame.

speaking of silliness, one past uni trend that I would like to see brought back, at least for one or two games.....the old cutoff mesh football jerseys with the longer, baggy sleeves. Maybe even throw in some of those old school turf cleats with the tiny rubber nubs on the bottom. Those were cool, too.
