"I'm a traditionalist. . . ." Seriously, Mendenhall is so thorougly inauthentic how could you guys not be just completely disgusted with him?
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

I have a low tolerance level for people who provide nonfunctional hyperlinks. But I'm sure that, like you, I'll be revulsed by whatever Bronco's latest verbal offense might be, so spare me the pain. Still, I like the fact that you and other Utes spend far more time parsing the words of Bronco than I do.

I like how you attributed the toilet-cleaning quote to Socrates.

It should be. He has nothing but disdain for you. I bet he'd rather be taking a road trip to Disneyland with family and friends than coaching the Spring Game.

Following other teams' spring practice? Really?

                Or maybe you're just a D-news junkie.

There's a lot of Greek in that thread: Archaea's signature line is a line from Socrates' Apology ("I know that I know nothing"), Waters' "Molon Labe" line from the story of the Spartans at Thermopylae (means "Come, take"), and Seattle's invocation of Socrates the hygienist.

                  I have won.

The Utah/BYU sports fan psychosis is interesting.

BYU fan cannot admit to itself that Utah has been the overall superior program over the past decade. NCAA Championship game, 2 BCS bowl victories, 2 undefeated football seasons, 2 #1 draft picks (NBA and NFL....granted, both were busts, but that is beside the point and should not be held against the U. once you go to the pros, the college should not be penalized).

Utah fan is so mired in almost 3 decades of extreme Little Brother Syndrome that he cannot properly accept the role and act accordingly, hence this continued unhealthy obsession with Bronco, Mormonism, the Church, and BYU fan's smug attitude. It is almost as though Utah fan thinks to himself, "Holy crap? Is this really happening? I can't believe it! We are a good program!"

SU is a good example of Utah Fan psychosis. Not-so-deep-down, he cannot really believe that the Utes have been so successful this past decade.

That's some great analysis over there. Sorry, CUF, I may have to cut back on my time here to have more time for the great sporting insights CG has to offer.

Disgusted isn't the term I'd use, but I'm certainly not a fan. Every time he opens his mouth, it seems his top priority is to audition to be a General Authority. The guy seems about as fake as they come.

These are good points. I once wrote something about "the demented Ute or Cougar fan," and your post is spot on. I am a recovering demented Ute fan. (I still love to beat BYU, but I don't think that part is demented. I don't disdain all BYU athletes anymore, as I did in my misspent youth.) That comes from living through the 70s and 80s in football, as well as some family dynamics (my brother is a thoroughly, scarily demented BYU fan, and I am not sure he is in recovery yet.)

It seems to me that the younger the Ute fan, the less demented he/she is about BYU. The great majority of BYU fans, on the other hand, seem to apply Daniel's dream to everything related to BYU -- and I am just not ready yet to see BYU athletics as part of the stone cut from the mountain without hands. But I don't think a lot of your fellow Cougs will ever give up on that notion.

Bogut is not a bust in the NBA, by the way. And Alex Smith, though a bust so far, may yet emerge as a good QB. Just like Max Hall may yet become a QB who doesn't fold against big-time opponents. But I'm not holding my breath on either possibility.
