  • Seeds and RPIs

I lifted this from a post on the Ute board. RPI is on the left, seed is in brackets:

    1 (1) Pittsburgh
    2 (2) Duke
    3 (1) North Carolina
    4 (1) Louisville
    5 (2) Michigan St
    6 (2) Oklahoma
    7 (2) Memphis
    8 (1) Connecticut
    9 (5) Utah
    10 (3) Missouri

I'm not an ardent complainer about BCS conference bias (I understand that ESPN now refers to a group of "Big Six" hoops conferences), but this is really pretty hard to defend. I would say so if it happened to BYU as well.

The committee inserted the Southwest Baptist loss in to the RPI calculations which puts Utah at about 23. Thats why they got a 5.

I expect you to be raising heck then.

      Sagarin ratings (through today):
      BYU - 23 (seed 8)
      Utah - 26 (seed 5)

You can do this with about any of the computer polls, except RPI.

I really wonder how RPI got this special status of legitimacy. There are Utah-type outlier examples like this every year. Do you really think Utah is the 9th best team in the country?
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

No, just saying the disparity is striking.

And I don't know why RPI is such a big deal, but it's my understanding the selection committee pays a lot of attention to it. That's my point, pretty much.

Not disputing your point, just wondering how you know the committee did that?

By the way, are BYU fans ever going to let go of that SW Baptist lost? It's becoming a bit like "Harline is still open."

Haven't you learned that BYU fans don't let anything go yet.

Fair enough. I know Ute fans won't let go of Max Hall "pick jokes" for a couple of years either. (And I will keep laughing at them. )

Sure they do. In football they have let go of:

                  every loss to Utah.

Funny, because I thought you said that not seeding Utah like a 9th ranked team was "pretty hard to defend". I'm not complaining about BYU's seed but I'd say that they have a lot more to complain about than Utah, if we look at nearly every objective measure (except the goofy RPI). They outrank them on nearly every computer ranking and were a foul shot from sweeping them.

EDIT: Wow....that sounds grumpier than I mean it. I'm going on 40 hours without sleep and need to go to bed. Point still stands though .

Amazing. Utes think a 5 seed is too high for them.

You do know your RPI is only high because the SW Baptist game is not included, right? You do know SW Baptist was on your schedule, right? They weren't a preseason game.

LOL. When I read this the first thing I thought of was Indycougs spread sheet.

I think a 5 for Utah is very fair, and an 8 for BYU is also fair.
