  • What is a crappy team?

I read on ESPN that Utah has only beaten crappy teams. What does that mean? They're crappy because Utah is really good, that's what it means. Crappy is relative. I read 3D's post about his pride at BYU hanging on to win the cliffhanger against Wyoming. LES was rockin' on that last drive. I'm sure those BYU kids who played that game don't think they just beat a crappy team. Good teams are good because they make most of the other teams look crappy. In every endeavor, there are 5% who stand out. Are the rest ipso fact crappy because the good make them look bad? Is Iowa State a crappy team? I don't know. Ask Jeff Lebowski. The world wants to punish the good for being good. It's not their fault most everyone else is crappy.

Exactly, yet most of the teams the U has played are even worse. That will be proven over the coming 4 weeks.

Besides Pitt, Utah's closest game was against WYO. The Utes have played 4 teams that have won a combined total of 4 games...mostly because they have played each other!

Exactly. All the teams that Utah has played, all those with really, really bad records, are only crappy because Utah is good. Great point.

Yes, they are truly a crappy team. Today is the first time in history they have beaten Texas.

I heard that and couldn't help but laugh. Of course it turns out they've only played 8 times, but still...

What was the line on this game? After ISU's last two games and Texas' big road win last week, it had to be huge. Two home losses this year to lousy teams. I can't imagine what the mood is like down there.

                    stone cold sober.

I guess we know this much at least: The Utes are not a crappy team.

I am not sure I see the point of this thread (but why should that matter?). Anyway, it does seem that we are starting to see how the Cougs and Utes have done against common opponents. So far, it seems clear that if BYU is a crappy team, Utah is at least less crappy. That's worth something, isn't it? My guess is that by season's end we'll know more. Or at least we'll have more information to argue about.

Don't worry, SU. If Utah wins all three of their next three games they will get some respect and people will forget that they almost lost to pitt at home.

This game was like Alabama losing to Vanderbilt or tOSU losing to Indiana. The mood is about like this:

Mack Brown wasn't happy after the game:

“We also told them we’ll look at every play very closely and see what needs to be changed. Four turnovers for us and we only gain one from them. We’re still not forcing enough turnovers. And we’re not protecting the ball on a weekly basis. We’ve done it for two games. We haven’t done it consistently for the year.

“To rush for 96 yards and give up 199 yards, the defense didn’t stop the run. This game was very, very similar to UCLA with the arrogance we played with after we beat Tech on defense. Our defense didn’t go out there and line up and stop ‘em. And what our offense did for three quarters was unacceptable ? having six points in this ballgame, kicking field goals. We even missed a field goal.

“We had fourth-and-goal from the one, jumped offsides and didn’t make it, which is unacceptable. We missed a field goal, which we haven’t been doing. We threw an interception in the end zone, which we haven’t been doing.

“We threw an interception in the end zone, which we haven’t been doing. We get the ball back with a turnover at the end of the game with a chance to win, and we turn it back over to them the next play.

“We have a third-and-18, hit the quarterback’s arms, and he throws it up. Their guy goes and gets it. Our guys stand there and watch it.

“It’s tough. Didn’t play well. WE said during the week, this team is not good enough to beat anybody unless they all come out and play as a team, and they didn’t. Coaches did a poor job, obviously. I told the players sometimes it’s hard whether you blame coaches or players because the players didn’t get ready to play, and it’s the coaches’ jobs to get them ready to play.

“It’s my job to get the coaches ready to play. We’ve got a lot of work to do before we play Baylor next week. It’s disappointing.”
The word is out: UT can't beat crappy teams at home. If UT loses to Baylor and A&M it is going to be a very long off season At least now there is some hope that BYU has a chance of beating Texas next year.

To paraphrase scottie on Boise, it's looking like Utah may have beaten a champion of a BCS conference.

I didn't feel any great pride in byu yesterday, but I did say that I had fun in that last series. The entire game was a snooze fest, so it was great to stand up and cheer and feel some atmosphere for once.

Make no mistake, byu should have blown that game open but couldn't do it. Byu had a short field and couldn't even convert 3 points. The offense gave up 9 points, half the game total. Byu is not good this year.

As for Utah, the media and public perception is going to be one of relative indifference, at least as it pertains to the other top teams. Why? Because Utah has beaten some crappy teams. I think the utes are using the Boise model...play a weak schedule and go undefeated. In fairness to the utes, scheduling games against Pitt, Iowa state, and noter dame should could for something and it isn't the utes fault that these teams stink this year.

Utah has a great squad this season, no doubt. They are cursed that the only good team they will play this season is tcu. I think that is why they will continue to get jumped. While it isn't utahs or boises fault that their opponents don't have great records, it isn't mizzous fault either. And mizzou just beat #1 Oklahoma.

I guess the answer to your question....crappy teams are like pornography....you watch them in secret and hope nobody catches you. (also, you know them when you see them)
