  • Bronco vs Heaps

    http://www.cougarboard.com/noframes/...tml?id=5974439

    I think this is insightful.

"According to PK, Bronco absolutely detested the Heaps press conference and the fact that Heaps had a PR rep.

Bottom line...Riley is Bronco's kind of guy...Heaps is not. Heaps presupposing that he would be the man must be driving Bronco crazy."

I remember Bronco making multiple references this past winter about "kids who come in with entitlement issues". He's made several non-football anti-Heaps and/or overly syrupy comments about Nelson's leadership and mental strength.

I've been surprised at the quotes just the last 24 hours from Bronco since Nelson's gone down about how upsetting this is.

Is this is a side story that will fester?

Bronco taps out in the 2nd on a rear-naked choke.

We certainly know the answer to this one, whether or not anything is really there or not.

Bronco's got an ax to grind on this subject. I don't know if it's with the fans, or with certain media, or with Jake. But he's grinding it.

I recall reading how this type of thing has been a real battle for Coach K at Duke over the past 10 years. During the glory days in the 90s some of the players may have been grade A idiots (Laettner, Hurly, Ferry) but they always put in the time as underclassman and all stayed all 4 years. When Duke was forced to recruit the Jay Williams, Corey Magette, and DeMarcus Nelson type players to keep up with UNC they have been good but not great. Coincidentally or not, they won the NC last year with a bunch of guys who who fit the mold of the 90's Blue Devils more than the 2000 ones.

Bronco may or may not like it, but he did let the true freshman play on the 2nd series of his first game. Winning is the surest way to end this or similar controversies.

I'll be interested to see if Bronco gets behind Heaps 100% now. If he doesn't, we can be sure he has non-football issues with Jake. I'm hoping that if any such issues have existed to this point, he gets over them immediately and gets on board with Heaps.

That fact that this needs to be said is staggering. The false-piety Bronco exudes sickens me. You're a great coach Bronco, but stop the preaching and run-on sentences.

I get the impression that Bronco always wanted Riley to get the job, he just couldn't throw to save his life and Bronco kept deluding himself into thinking that somehow Riley was going to wake up one day and have a decent arm. I'm guessing this delusion would have gone on far longer than necessary (and really, it already has gone on far longer than necessary), if not for the injury, simply because Nelson is a Bronco kind of guy.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Does anyone really think Bronco is not 100% behind Heaps right now? Really?

It's not staggering. It doesn't need to be said. I really don't understand how you are reaching that conclusion based off of Bronco's mostly glowing comments about Heaps in the past year.

Does anyone have access to Heaps fireside attendance record?

I think Bronco is 100% behind Heaps. I also think Bronco would prefer to have Nelson out there as the starter, and is not doing all he can even now to ensure that Heaps is the unquestioned leader of the offense. I don't know what he's doing behind closed doors, but I think he could do better when not behind those doors.

I don't expect to convince you but if you asked the casual observer about all of this they'd say the same thing. Lying a few times this fall also hasn't helped his case. It's ok to admit that he's a coach not an apostle...yet.

Partially invested. Mumbled the hymns, spoke to McKay during most of Bronco's talk, and inadvertantly genuflexed following the closing prayer.

I'm not sure I buy this. Given the actions and statements of the coaching staff, I think it is more likely that the division in the coaching staff regarding who should be the starter at QB was in the Anae/Doman arena. Likely, if Bronco had an opinion, it was on Doman's side and therefore he wouldn't step in or let it be known because his O.B. books are very hard on undermining a person you set in authority over another person. I think some of the evidence for my theory is that Anae was on the sideline at FSU. I think further evidence is that no true #1 was named prior to the injury. Every coach knows that a two QB system doesn't work but our coaches tried to make it work. I assume because of a split opinion.

Who wanted whom? I think Anae wanted Nelson because he took care of the ball better than Heaps and challenged his coaching creativity. I think Doman, surprisingly, wanted Heaps because Heaps was a Doman recruit and Nelson was not. Also, a QB coach could really make a name for himself with one or two amazing QBs and I believe Doman thought Heaps could be the start of him making that name for himself. Of course, that would mean Bronco wanted Heaps, imho.

Anyway, I think it is a bit pointless now. I don't think any coach would continue to undermine a starter because the starter held a presser or wasn't going on a mission. If the guy will help you win, most coaches will be 100% behind that guy. When the decision is split between two guys, that's when you will see the subversive stuff from a coach who wants to be right.
