  • Utah-Pittsburgh

I am started to get giddy about the start of the season, so here is a brief breakdown of the match ups.

    Pitt Offense vs. Utah defense

    Pitt O-line vs. Utah D-line

Pitt has a AA candidate in Jason Pinkston at LT, but alot of question marks and inexperience at the other positions. Alex Karabin and Greg Gaskins at Center and guard seem to be the real concerns for Pitt. Unfortunately for them, Utah's Defensive line strength is up the middle with Siliga and Dave Krugar. Utah has experience and depth at both ends.

Pinkston is a marvelous player, but the rest of the individual matchups favor Utah

    Pitt RB's vs. Utah LB's

This is Pitts real mismatch. Dion Lewis was a freshman phenom and Ray Graham is likely just as good. Utah replaces all 3 LB's and unfortunately, the most experienced of the group, J.J. Williams , is not going to play due to a fott injury suffered in Fall Camp, and another, Jamel King is out with a concussion.

    Big advantage Pitt

    Pitt QB/WR vs. Utah Secondary

Pitt will be breaking in a new QB in Tino Sunseri, who, by Pitt insider reports started camp strong, but has hit a bit of a wall. Jonathan Baldwin is another AA candidate, but is the only upper classman in the 2 deep at WR/TE for Pitt, so a bit of an unknown for them. Utah has one returning starter, Brandon Burton, who will likely shadow Baldwin on the field, and Lamar Chapman returning as Nickle back as it appears Conroy Black may have edged him as the other starting corner. The big surprise at camp has been the play of Brian Blechen who has nailed down the starting SS as a true freshman. Justin Taplin-Ross will start at FS.

I say this area is a push given the youth/inexperience of each unit and the fact that Pitt's offense starts and ends with the running game.

    Utah Offense vs. Pitt's Defense

    Utah O-line vs. Pitt D-line

This is the best matchup of the game. Utah returns 4 starter, but the one loss was a big one at LT. John Cullen has won the starting spot through camp and has had more ups than downs overall. Pitt has 2 monsters at DE with Greg Romeus and Jaball Sheard. Their interior line is unheralded but experienced.

I give the slight edge to Pitt due to Romeus playing opposite the only newcomer in Cullen. Look for Utah to play TE or a blocking H-back to Romeus's side to give Cullen some help in his first start

    Utah's RB vs. Pitt's LB

Utah has 2 proven backs in Eddie Wide and Matt Asiata. Tauni Vakapuna was the surprise of the camp and has locked down the #3 spot in the rotation, and will likely see substantial time in short yardage/goal line. Asiata is an excellent pass blocker and will likely be in to help protect, esp early in the game, against Pitt's pass rush. Pitt has a beast at MLB in Dan Mason. There is still some uncertainty at the OLB's spots as starters have not been named yet.

    Advantage Utah

    Utah's QB/WR vs. Pitt's Secondary

Wynn is clearly the starter despite and up and down 2nd week of camp. Utah's WR's are heavy on talent and light on experience. Brooks, Shaky Smithson, and Luke Matthews will start with Devonte Christopher and a trio of JC transfers(Reggie Dunn, Martavious Lee, and Dexter Ransom) as the primary back ups. Of the JC's Dunn is the only one who will likely make noise as Ransom just got to camp(and is recovering from a Knee injury) and Lee is barely getting up to speed for his own hamstring injury. For Pitt, Dom DeCicco is a possible All COnference performer at SS. SO, Jarred Holley is slated to start at FS. Both starting corners have experience and should be solid.

This one is unknown to me as to who has the advantage

    Intangibles

Utah's home field advantage is a big plus, and the fact that it is the first game of the year at altitude for the Panthers, should favor the Utes

This is going to be a low scoring, somewhat ugly game. I think that Utah will be able to exploit Pitt's bigggest weakness; inexperienced offensive line; to keep pressure on a young QB, and to disrupt the Pitt running game. Lewis will likely get over 100 yards, but will e getting many of them on individual effort/skill. Utah's offense will muster enough points to put the game away

    Utah 21 Pitt 16

Nice analysis. I think Utah wins this going away... 31-6.

I think Wynn struggles and the game ends up being a lot closer than it should be/than people think. Utah is very strong on both sides of the line and if Wynn can put it together, Utah could win going away. I'm not sold on Wynn though, and if you are a Ute fan, you have to hope that Whit sticks to his guns and learns from the two QB system errors of last year and doesn't play Cain.

This is a game Utah should win, IMO, and I think they do, but not going away. They'll need Wynn to play better than I think he's shown so far in order to do so.

Pitts run game is my biggest concern. That has to be the focus for our defensive preparation.

Second biggest concern is John Cullen matching up against either of the Pitt defensive ends. Recall when Wynn had his bell rung in the BYU game last year?

If Utah can neutralize one one or the other of my concerns above, I think they win by at least a touchdown.

          Three thoughts on this:

          1. Dexter Ransom looks like a freaking defensive end. Unbelievable size and build for a WR. However, I swear he walks with a limp, and it's not a Chappelle limp as far as I can tell. I really hope he can get back, but right now I don't expect much. The vast majority of dialed-in bluehairs ain't gonna ever know Dexter Ransom's name. They will know Griff Mcnabb's. Just my opinion.

          2. Where do you find a guy with a freaking name like Dom Deccico? That's totally unbelievable. AND he's a strong safety? Loved his dad in Coneheads.

          3. We are going to wear their asses like hats.

If looking ugly during camp were people, Wynn would be China. However, Whit didn't make any "two QB system errors" last year, in my humble but correct opinion.

Cain is lights out in fall camp, two years in a row. Unbelievable. Cain would have started in front of many Utah greats, based on his camp performance last year, and I'm talking names like Croshaw, Crosswhite, Rice. He's filthy in camp.

Also, he was 7-1 against an, uh, less than impressive slate of teams, teams that will populate BYU's schedule if this expansion train wreck goes through. In this streak of domination, he put up 16 points in regulation against AFA, hung 3 on Wyoming in a half, and exploded for 7 against SJSU in three freaking quarters.

Utah's offense was better last year with Jordan Wynn than it was with Terrence Cain. While Whit may have picked the wrong guy coming out of camp, the choice was clear to everyone based on the camp performance. Add in that Wynn was a 130 pound true freshman six months prior, and the choice for Cain was pretty clear. However, Wynn was better in games.

I like Cain. He's the best backup Utah has had since Brett Ratliff, lo, these many years later. I hope we don't see him this year.

Also, Utah fans will be happier if we stop trying to make Jordan Wynn into Alex Smith. He's gonna have some rough patches this year. He showed enough last year to bring some excitement, and I think he's going to be much better than serviceable, but I'm also quite sure he'll never spend an evening as an invited guest at the Downtown Athletic Club.

He also looks a little like Linguini from Ratatouille, what with the large schnoz and jumbled hair. I wonder what he's hiding in his helmet.

I think it is because he has been hit with a few to many shells. He must not be as hard as 50.

We've made opposing QBs look bad in our openers. Arizona had Kovalchuck, and he had two TDs but also two INTs. Good effort. Borel was dreadful throwing last year, and Nick Sheridan/Steven Threet were dreadful at Michigan. Oregon State played two QBs and even though we lost, both Canfield and Moevao were horrible.

But Ben Olson lit us up -- and 2006 was our worst year of linebacker play under Kyle.

The key is getting a lead of any kind, put pressure on Pitt's QB to make throws and take Lewis out of the game with bad down-and-distance, and Utah will be fine. Pittsburgh has some studs defensively, but we haven't started a season with this kind of experience and momentum on offense AND home field for our opener under KW.

This is one of the reasons why I think Utah has a great chance to win this game. With Pitt starting a new Q.B. and having a very inexperienced O-Line Utah's D line and blitz packages could cause fits for Pitt's new q.b.

My 2 biggest concern for Utah in this game revolves around the linebackers and John Cullen. Can the LB's step up and make plays and stop Dion Lewis? Can John Cullen stop Romeus?

It should be a really fun game.

I think Pitt will score a 1st quarter touchdown, but struggle the rest of the game. Kyle's had all summer to come up with a gameplan to stop a one-dimensional team. Utah will be ready and win with relative ease. This is my week 1 lock. The spread is down to Utah -2.5. Ute Fans: Cash in some food stamps and make this bet. I usually don't watch Utah games, but I'm excited for this one and will definitely watch it. I'm not sure if my excitement is just because it is pretty much the first game of the college football season or just because of the matchup. I think it is the latter.
