  • Jim McMahon and the BYU Hall of Fame.

While I obviously don't have a dog in this fight, I have always found the BYU and Jim McMahon debate fascinating. I don't think that either party has clean hands in the whole thing. McMahon flaunted the rules and did whatever he wanted and never even tried to hide it. BYU turned a blind eye to everything he was doing and than booted him from the school when he ran out of eligibility and couldn't help them anymore.

The McMahon discussion is heating up on twitterboard again and I'm interested in the thoughts that people have on this. The interesting thing about this is the defenders of the faith type that refuse to acknowledge that BYU may have possible in any way done something wrong in the McMahon saga.

My opinion is that both parties need to swallow their pride and realize they both screwed up. BYU needs to give McMahon his honorary degree and McMahon needs to come out and talk about all the BYU did for him and his career. BYU puts him in the Hall of Fame and both end up looking good.

Of course, I kind of like the way things are now. BYU looks petty in not admitting the best QB in the history of the school in the Hall of Fame, and McMahon keeps on taking pot shots at BYU here and there because he feels wronged.

I think Jim McMahon should reject it pending BYU's tolerance for gays, like Marlon Brando rejected the GF AW pending US return of America to Native Americans. (Am I mixing up Brando/GF with Scott/Patton?)

BYU IS tolerant of gays. My father told me of someone he did business with at BYU that was gay (lesbian). And my guess is that their are currently gays attending BYU.

      Your comment, however, was gay.

Man, it sounds a lot like CUF.

Is there a written set of rules for inclusion into the HOF? If they are written, it would be difficult to make exceptions since both parties understand the criteria.

In my opinion, his record setting took place on the football field and definitely not in the classroom and considering that many in the administration (if that is true) knew of his HC issues and allowed him to play for BYU and get BYU in the spotlight, cut him some slack. Both parties were complicit.

Do they still have a theater department and ballroom dance team? If they do I'm pretty sure your assumption is correct.

I wish he had flaunted the rules.

Jim McMahon is on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week for the seventh time in his life. That's the exact same number as Steve Young, making them the most-featured SI cover boys in BYU's history. This cover is different than the previous six Jim has graced because it's about how his live-in girlfriend, Laurie Navon, who shares the cover, is dealing with Jim's early onset of dementia. According to the article, Jim is a part of a lawsuit against the NFL alleging the league "concealed information about the dangers of repeated blows to the head," that will be heard in U.S. District Court here in Philadelphia.

The NFL hasn't had great luck in Philadelphia courts, losing previous judgments on broadening its antitrust protection in 2010, and arbitration cases against Terrell Owens in '06 and, more recently, Drew Brees. Jimmy Mac is beloved in Philly for his years as an Eagle, and if that means anything, it may not bode well for the NFL in a Philadelphia court.

Eagles Nation loved Jimmy Mac for the take-no-prisoners style with which he played the game, which, sadly, probably contributed to his current condition. I've known Mac since I was 17 years old and saw him play that way at BYU.

Given Jimmy Mac's circumstances, I am calling on BYU to reconsider the policy of not allowing non-graduates into the school's hall of fame and induct Mac immediately as well as retire his No. 9 jersey. The school should do it this year. Do it while his faculties are still somewhat intact. Do it while he can appreciate the applause and the adoration of the people who watched him play and cheered for him in LaVell Edwards Stadium.
And this isn't necessarily about McMahon, but how annoying:

We care so much about perception and appearances, sometimes we alienate people. Mohammed Elewonibi is one of BYU's two Outland Trophy winners. He was drafted in the third round in 1990 by the Washington Redskins and after he left Provo, he allowed his hair to grow into dreadlocks. In 1995, Moe came to the Eagles for a brief stint. One day we sat at his locker and talked about BYU. I asked how often he returned to campus.

"Only been back once," he told me. "And won't be back anytime soon."

                  "What happened?" I asked.

"I was there for a football banquet and an administrator said to me, 'You couldn't have gotten a haircut for the occasion?' " Maybe it was well-meaning. But one of BYU's greatest players hasn't been to Provo in two decades.

You can see Mohammed Elewonibi's Outland Trophy in the Student Athlete Center next to his jersey, but you won't see Moe.

How long ago did Jim get divorced. It was always my understanding his ex-wife and kids were active LDS, though that may have just been another murban legend.

This shit is why I have a love-hate relationship with BYU.

Jimmy Mac and his family lived a few miles from me in Chicago when I was growing up. His family wasn't in my ward, but in the other ward that went to our building. This is when he was still playing for the Bears. Despite his public comments about BYU and reputation as a wild man, he was actually a family man. His family was at church regularly, and he would occasionally be there as well. The bishop of that ward was the father of a good friend of mine, and they interacted with the family quite a bit. By all accounts, Jimmy was a good father, a good husband, and, when the cameras weren't around, a pretty chill dude.

I think they have been divorced about ten years now. I had heard somewhere that his deteriorating mental condition was a contributing factor, but who really knows.

When my nephew was playing college baseball my brother and I would always sit with the father of a teammate who was one of JM's closest personal friends. He used to tell us stories about Jim and all of them reflect what you wrote. Jim's public persona doesn't come close to what he actually is which is a very nice and generous man. In spite of his sometimes contentious relationship with BYU Jim has never refused them when they asked him to show up to a game or do something else.

I want McMahon's jersey on the wall. I don't care what he did at BYU regarding the rules. I don't care if he graduated either. I have no idea if he did.
Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

I'm sure appearing on the cover of the country's biggest sports magazine with his live in girlfriend will bolster his chances.
