  • Stuff I recently learned on Utefans

(Especially for those following the Expansion stories.)

Utah is the Pac 10's Big prize in the global expansion game

Utah is a lock with or without Colorado; even alone

The Pac 10 is desperate to take Utah in part because it feels it must "wound" the MWC

Colorado is a charity case for the Pac 10

Salt Lake's population will exceed Denver's in just a few years

All Colorado alumni hate their school; in fact, they all leave Colorado for the west coast, whereas all Utah alumni stay in Salt Lake

The best place to learn about CU and what CU alumni think of Colorado is on CU sports boards

The Pac 10 favoring Utah over BYU has nothing to do with religion

The Pac 10 would never take any religiously affiliated school, not just BYU

The Denver-Aurora-Broomfield, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area ... population was 2,357,404 on 2007-07-01, an +14.23% increase since United States Census 2000.
The Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area ... population estimates division placed the population at 1,130,293, an increase of 161,410 or 16.7 percent since April 2000
It is almost half the population! With that 2% lead in growth, it will catch up in no time!

You must feel like that chimp that has figured out how to stick a twig in a termite mound to get protein when you go over there.

Why you're not the UF alpha male remains a mystery.
        Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

My favorite one may be this, though: Cowherd said that Utah edges out Boise for the Pac 10 because Salt Lake has a better airport.

Wait a minute, Boise uses the airport as a reason why Utah will NOT be invited! It can't be both, so...

Ahh how sad, people at Utefans have figured out Seattle's little game so he run's here for BYU fans to make it all better.

Okay math people, if those growth rates remain unchanged, when will SLC surpass Denver?

A really long time because Denver starts out a lot further a head.

Here is a post by Jdurrant

A post earlier claimed that PAC officials found that Texas and Utah made more sense than Colorado and Texas, and I will tell you why: Population growth over the length of the next TV deal.

According to 2008 estimates by the end of the next TV deal - which would be somewhere around 2030 - Utah's population is expected to nearly double and reach over 4 million people. Of the four counties that make up over 75% of the population, by 2030 Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, and Utah counties are estimated to have over 3 million inhabitants. Now, the kicker is this: Almost a full third of those (approx. 950,000) are projected to be males between the ages of 18-64 - your target demographic for college football.

The Denver/Boulder region is expected to reach about 4 million people (3,760,000) by 2030 - an increase of about 1.3 million. Compare that to the 3,100,000 expected in the Wasatch Front and an increase of 1.2 million. The big difference between the two is that Utah's growth comes almost entirely from "natural increase" (i.e. residents having kids) as opposed to migration. Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, and Colorado all have very high population growth rates, though Utah has by far the highest % of that coming from natural increase (The other four states listed are right about 50/50).

By the end of the next PAC TV deal, SLC could be a top-15, top-20 TV market with a majority of those being home-grown with a natural attachment to the local sports scene. From the PAC's point-of-view, adding Utah now secures them a future top-20 TV market regardless of who else joins the party. From an expansion/college president standpoint, you must look to the future as much as the present, and the future course of the SLC TV market and the University of Utah as an academic/athletic school is very promising and very attractive.

Not saying that anything is a done deal, but there are aspects to this that no one is talking about, though there have been many questions about the financial additions Utah would add. Eventually the PAC would have to add an additional school to the party, but believing that a Utah invite makes sense financially and is conditional if and only if a school like Colorado joins in is simply not the case.

Natural increase is also less reliable. Someday Mormons are going to start having less kids like everybody else. It happened to the Chinese. Probably will happen to Mormons and eventually Hispanics too.
