  • The Bird and the Bee

I am a sucker for bands that put on weird/ecclectic stage shows. Groups like The Flaming Lips, Polyphonic Spree, or I'm From Barcelona.

In the spirit of old 60s soundtracks and bands like The Gentle Waves or even Jem, I recommend checking out The Bird and The Bee. They are an LA band that are getting more rotation on the now defunct indie 103.1 (switched to an all internet format now). They play at offbeat locations and usually have about 10-12 people onstage wearing strage outfits and playing instruments ranging from traditional guitars and keys to toy xylophones, wooden buckets, or kazoos.

In early Feb, they are performing at the Museum of Natural History for a series of lectures on Darwinism and evolution.

This season's First Fridays celebrate "Darwin Year" through entertaining and fascinating conversations with six of the world's foremost authors and experts on the life of Darwin, the science of evolution, and the revolutionary impact of the man and his work. Join us in discovery with an evening of programming: a curator-led tour, a discussion forum with Dr. Donald R. Prothero and Dr. Michael W. Quick, artist performances The Bird and the Bee and Jukebox and a DJ lounge with The Phatal DJ + DJ Michael Stock
Should be a fun date night. My wife digs this "chick's" voice, esp the song My Love. When I hear that tune, I can't help but think of the old Blake Edwards films and the weird music he would use to feature in his movies.

Check out My Love, Letter to Japan, or Polite Dance Song at their myspace.

This is a cool single, as well, but from their first disc, not their newest release.

      Interesting stuff. I liked it.

Which is the bird and which is the bee? I need to know this before I am a fan.

Your parents should have explained this to you long ago.

Thanks for the recommendation. I like. DDD, buy the Shure earphones. Read some reviews on them. CNET does all of their multimedia player reviews exclusively with them.

sorry, yes I have. I enjoy electronica and DJs very much, but not really the live shows too much. I have never seen ratatat live, is it worthwhile?

I saw Tiesto when he was in LA mixing his then-new disc a couple of years ago. After about 30 minutes, I was very bored. It simply felt like being at a club.

Ratatat is pretty good. I think I have two of their albums.

If you want to see a live show that will burn your retinas out, check out Dan Deacon. He's got a new album out soon and an upcoming show in Sea-town!

And of course for weird/eclectic stage shows very few compete with Of Montreal.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Actually it was Surfah who saw them and said it was awesome. But uh yeah, he said it was radical.

I saw Of Montreal for Sunlandic Twins. It was pretty good. It was basically Flaming Lips Lite, though, as far as stage presence.

I think Bird and the Bee is going up to Seattle in Feb.

Apparently their tour for this newest album was pretty dang bizarre.

A bit off topic, but did you ever give the Ting Tings a shot? I love that disc....so fun for driving or whatever....very upbeat.

I noticed that Great DJ was on Slumdog soundtrack and I have seen That's Not My Name on some commercial. They are growing in popularity now.

I had a major Tim Myers sad fit when it became obvious that he wants to be the modern day Burt Bacharach and write commercial jingles all day long. I hope the Ting Tings don't go that route, as well.
