  • If you're LDS and/or a BYU fan and this story doesn't make you feel dirty

    there's something wrong with you.

    http://recruiting.scout.com/2/40331.html

Good grief, I can just imagine the gauntlet Manti is being put through now, replete with a first presidency grilling and a blessing by Thomas S. Monson! So this is what schools compete against recruiting Utah hot shots.

    Here's my favorite part:

"During that important meeting, Monson gave Ngata a “blessing,” a laying on of the hands along with a vocalized prayer. In that prayer, he uttered words that made Olga feel immediately after that Oregon was where her son should be."

I bet that's not what was intended! LOL. Give mom credit for finally letting her eighteen year old boy go to the school he wanted to attend all along!!! Mormons are so weird.

I picked this up on CB. It's a sign of the lack of introspection over there that the commentary is all about what did Oregon do to buy the kid off, nothing about BYU and its owner's conduct. This should put to rest any idea that BYU is not just a department of the LDS church.

Honestly, involving the LDS First Presidency in recruiting for BYU seems so undignified. You wouldn't see Pope Ratzinger condescend to that, I guarantee. I need a barf bag.

Did Manti have a visit with the First Presidency?

If you knew anything about the Ngata story you would not have posted this. First of all, yes BYU recruited Haloti very hard, however they did not get him in touch with President Monson to try and sway him, you are an idiot for saying that.

The Ngata family had connections to President Monson through other means. Haloti felt strongly that he needed to go to Oregon, he wanted to play at BYU but he felt he needed to go to Oregon, and now we know why.

His freshman year at Oregon (when he would have been on a mission if he attended BYU) his father passed away in a car accident. Haloti was there for his family during this tough time (he is the oldest son). Then shortly after his junior year his mother died of a heart attack, now he has to take care of all of his younger siblings, so he decides to go pro. He gets drafted 12th overall and can now support his family who does not have parents.

I dont think Olga knew at the time why she felt the need for him to attend Oregon but she does now. If he was at BYU his mom would have passed away right after he came home from his mission, he would have to withdraw from school to take care of his family and they would still be struggling.

Do you think you or I would know it if he did? This came out because the parents had loose lips and the boy wound up not going to BYU. I bet the things they're doing to Manti would raise the hair on your head.

I think BYU needs to call a Poly to the twelve to counteract Whit hiring a poly as DC.

Makes my blood boil. Indeed, if your Beamonesque leap to conclusions had any basis in fact, I'd be really, really mad right now.

This isn't even good trolling. SU, you're capabale of so much better.
            Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

lol @ SU! Glad to see someone else has the correct 411 on 'loti. CJ has hopefully put to rest the Ngata saga.

The problem I have with this is why does BYU position itself as the school you go to if you want to go on a mission. If you want to skip mission and get ready for NFL go somewhere else.

I don't think BYU positions itself that way as much as if you're a legitimate NFL prospect, why attend BYU irrespective of going on a mission or not?

I am true blue. But if I was a super prep, Parade AA, destined for the NFL, I would have gone to a school like USC that would have prepared me for the NFL. Actually, when I came out of HS I wouldn't have been a Trojan. I'd have gone to The U.

I agree. BYU should market itself as the best place for every LDS kid, whether a mission is in the plans or not.

I know when my brother was going through the recruiting process, BYU brought "you'll be able to meet your wife" as their main pitch.....wth? They lost his interest once it went down that road.

Yes and the content of the First Presidency blessing alluded to that. The blessing itself was a pitch!

Compare that to hearing "Come and prove yourself, comptete against the best AND win a championship". Which program would you choose?
