That list is obviously wrong. 38-13 career, 32-7 last three years and Butch Davis makes it over him? Whit should probably be higher too.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostAt least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Yeah, that one was funny too. I think Spurrier and Bowden are both a little iffy, if we're only looking at the last 5 years. Jury's still out on Rodriguez. I'll retract if he turns it around next year, but UM talent is still UM talent--isn't part of being a good coach adapting your scheme?Originally posted by Surfah View PostDennis Erickson makes that list?
I just think it's funny that Bronco's so hot last year and after a 10-3 season--10-3--he suddenly sucks. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

And KW sucked the previous two years, but is now everyone's dandy. More BCS bias.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostYeah, that one was funny too. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I assume it would be due to what he has accomplished over such a short time span.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostOdd that Urban is over PC. He has fewer wins, fewer Heismans, fewer conference championships, fewer BCS bowls, and fewer top 4 finishes.
I guess he has Tim Tebow, though."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

I think the Bronco backlash is because he underachieved this season while Utah overachieved. He didnt help with the Quest for Perfection stuff. And the losses he had this season were all blowout-type losses. Hard to say Bronco is one of the top 25 coaches in football when he did such a crappy job in the Vegas Bowl.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostYeah, that one was funny too. I agree that 10 win seasons are great, but they are not great when they all come at the expense of lousy teams. BYU didn't really beat any good teams this season, just really lousy ones....in the case of Washington and UCLA....almost historically lousy.
Bronco will have another chance in the spotlight this coming season. Let's see what he does. Will he have his team prepared and UP for the BLUE RIVER SHOOTOUT and home game against the Seminoles? Or will BYU choke against a big name opponent.
Do you believe in Bronco as he preps for OU? I kinda don't. Sorry. I believe in Bronco as he preps for UNLV or Wyoming. But BYU needs to show that it can get up for these big games. Miami and Penn State were over 15 years ago. Time to hang our hat on something more recent.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Agreed. It is a 5 year scope.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostI assume it would be due to what he has accomplished over such a short time span.
If you go out to 8 years when PC first came to SC, PC would add about 8 more losses to his L column. Urban....I have no idea, but it is likely more than that.
Urban is a great coach, no doubt, though. And i don't even have an issue with him being #1. Just kind of scrutinizing the top dog. But over the past 5 years, Urban has a pretty solid claim to #1, I think.
I found it interesting that in his post-game interviews, he cited using the SC model of recruiting to help build an annual powerhouse. You can see it is working for him, as Florida should be one of the favorites again next year.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

If we go back 8 years for Meyer (which is the total number of years he's been a head coach), that would include his first year at Utah when the team went 10-2 and the two years he was at Bowling Green where his record was 17-6. That would make his record 71-17.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostAgreed. It is a 5 year scope.

A team can't go wrong with either Meyer or Carroll as head coach. I'd like to see their teams square off sometime soon. Urban is a great coach.
If he keeps this up for a few more seasons, you have to start putting him in the all-time discussions. He can hang around like Bowden and amass victories, but how many championships and Heismans has Bowden won? So why not include Urban in that chat? Urban is the real deal.Fitter. Happier. People who say Whittingham sucked until this season lack an understanding of the normal arc of building a football power. He did not inherit a lot. I for one saw him moving toward this year. Take a look at Saban's record for example. He's had plenty of years like Whit's first three. At least Whit won his bowl games, one of them a huge upset. I agree it's too early to write off Bronco. But Whit's record actually shows a nice, healthy arc.
I don't know why fans are so stupid they judge a coach in one year increments. Really, there's not another word for it other than stupid. By and large fans are stupid. A hotshot gets recruited and in the normal course he doesn't contribute for two years. Then until a program gets established injuries have a much larger impact. What do they expect?
Whittingham has a won-loss record career of well north of 70%, he has one spectacular year, and several quality wins including big upsets. He's been competitive with BYU each year they lost. There's nothing in his record to suggest anything other than he's a terrific coach. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Mike Shannahan seemed like he could do no wrong at one time. I feel more comfortable judging Pete Carroll as no. 1 than Urban. Urban has been very fortunate. He's played his cards right. It will be interesting to see if he can stay where he is for the next ten years.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View Postthat is an impressive record.
