  • Utah's best WR this decade

Cougjunkie's best-of-decade thread got me thinking. He's professed man love for David Reed in the past, but do others agree he was Utah's best WR?

Also keep in mind that only Steve Smith's senior season was during this decade (JC transfer, played 1999-2000 for Utah). However he did average a MWC record 20.6 yards per catch.

Stevonne Smith has had a great pro career, but like HL said in the thread, he didn't do that much up on the hill.

I've got a special place in my heart for TLT, but in his only year as a featured receiver he fought through injuries that limited his potential impact.

David Reed was our go-to receiver this year, and stepped up pretty big at the end of last year, but he really only gave us a season and a half.

So, IMO, it comes down to Warren and Savoy. Here's the numbers:

        I voted for Savoy.

Career stats for the other three receivers:

David Reed: 106 receptions, 1,615 yards (15.24 YPC), 11 TD's; 19 rushing yards, one TD
          Steve Smith: 78 receptions, 1603 yards (16.72 YPC), 9 TD's
          Travis LaTendressse: 135 receptions, 1782 yards (13.20 YPC), 12 TD's

Where does Cliff Russell fall stat-wise? Seems like he was good enough to make the list even though injures helped him flame out in the NFL.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Cliff was one of the fastest players to play in this state ever but he suffered from the same thing that Steve Smith suffered from at the U, nobody to get him the ball down field like the others mentioned here benefited from.

Cliff was so fast. I don't know his electronic time but I know he ran a hand timed 40 in the 4.2's before his senior year.

Based on production at the college level I voted for Paris Warren. His back to back seasons were probably the most productive back to back seasons the U has seen from a wide out.

If i were to go by pure talent though here is how I would rank them. Like i have said in previous posts, a couple of these guys were screwed because of the quarterback and offense they played in.

                  1. Steve Smith
                  2. David Reed
                  3. Cliff Russel
                  4. Steve Savoy
                  5. Paris Warren
                  6. Travis Lateendresse

Steve smith and david reed are similar to me as I spent the seasons screaming at the tv to get them the ball. Anyone who watched stevonne could see that we just needed to get him the ball. His senior year he had 5 kick returns called back

I'm glad BYU doesn't have to face Reed or for that matter Key again. The Utes always reload at wideout though

Key had a good game against BYU and did basically nothing else all season. I think he caught a TD pass against CSU.

I'm curious to see how Matthews, Christopher, and Brooks step up to replace Reed's production.

Brooks has always been a question mark, but as a Y fan, Christopher scares me. He is always a threat to break one.

I wonder if Casteel was a bit gun shy after the knee injury against AFA a few years ago. He really seemed to not be as aggressive when running his routes after the injury as he was before. Perhaps he would have been on this list as well.

                              You know, here's Casteel's stats:

                              127 receptions, 1,653 yards, 13.01 YPC, 17 TD's; 550 rushing yards, 2 TD's

Those are pretty comparable numbers to the other guys on this list.

And I agree with you that Casteel didn't look as explosive last year, but he still put up some good numbers amidst a ton of offensive playmakers in 2008.
