I could see where the Utes could make that claim. I don't recall 1984 but how many Top 20 teams did we beat back then.
Maybe they can, but seriously enjoy being the number 2 team in teh country and a great season, dont immediately start comparing your accomplisments to BYU.

BYU will ever be the stick against which Utah measures its program.
Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

The Utes are frustrated this morning. They went to bed with a sliver of hope. KW was calling AP voters all over the country, acting the fool, trying his hardest to beg effectively.
Ute fans wake up this morning and are shocked, SHOCKED that the AP didn't buy into their bag of tricks, so now they are pissed. They are also kicking themselves for being fair-weather and not flying to the SUGAR BOWL to witness a great accomplishment. Instead, they stayed home to watch what they assumed would be a loss, only to realize that they didn't give their own team enough credit. So where do they lash out this morning?......BYU in 1984.
I think it was Fiyero that complained about digging up SI articles from 2001. Well, 2001 was only 7 years ago. Now we have rogue Zoots digging up stuff from 1984 because they are desperate and disappointed. As Fiyero said, Don't be a [zoot], be a fan. Don't let the envy consume you.
This season is now over. And, once again, only one team in Utah has ever won a national championship.
Congrats to this year's Utah Utes. They had a killer season, to be sure. But they are still in the chill of the giant shadow from the South.

Was he really personally reaching out to AP voters?

Yes. Making phone calls last night.
Nothing says national champ like begging.
"Please vote for us! I will be your friend!"
You almost wonder if Whit's borderline classless behavior last night was what wound up sealing his fate. He probably annoyed more voters than he swayed. It would be ironic if his efforts are what actually sealed his doom.

Now that is pretty damn funny. I thought it was only ute fans emailing stuff to these voters but to hear that Kyle was actually making calls late last night really makes me laugh.

It is interesting the mentality at some programs. Coaches like Stoops and Carroll that could have a vote but don't even bother because they hate the system.
Compare with KWhit, who sells his soul and does a mini Jerry Lewis telethon last night in an effort to win a few votes.
KWhit was on Dan Patrick show this morning and he sounds like a stand up guy, so the fact that he was electioneering last night seems out of character.

He is a stand up guy. I am pretty shocked that he did that.

The whole story doesn't make sense to me. IF you are calling to campaign, you are doing it during the national championship game...why wouldn't he be watching it? And, why would he risk distracting the writers whose votes he is trying to get from doing their job...doesn't hold water. If you wait until afterwards, you're calling eastern writers after midnight and most other writers after 10:00Pm.
I'm not buying what was reported unless I get some kind of clarification.
"They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.
Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.
