  • Bronco and recruiting

Maybe Bronco's got it figured out with his "Football #5" schtick.

If you're a 5-star recruit, let's optimistically say that your chances of making a living in the NFL are 10%. If I'm a parent of said recruit (Manti Teo's dad?), I actually like the fact that the prospective coach realizes this and cares about the rest of my son's college experience. I think there's little doubt that college football as a whole cares little about the athlete and a lot about using them up and spitting them out. So, in the end, Bronco the wizard is going to fill BYU with 5-star recruits who only NEED to practice 90 minutes a day.

Personally, I think Bronco's just saying the right things for his superiors (and probably the wrong thing for his boosters). Does anyone honestly believe that a man who runs up to the Y every year with his team doesn't have a competitive streak in him?
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I don't know. But if I am Mike Middleton, I am pretty pissed.

Bronco isn't the one that has to hang out on the phones all day begging donors for more cash. if I am a Legacy donor, the first thing I want to know is why the crap should I give mad cash to a guy who makes football his #5 priority?

When my annual review comes around, i will tell the partner I work for that my job is my #5 priority, then I will ask for a raise.

He will probably be in such shock that it moved from #8 to #5, that he just may give me that raise!

Does Mike Middleton know how to use a phone? He has been going to call and convince me to "come back to the fold" since the UCLA game in LA last year.

Proof that I am nowhere near anyone who matters' radar--I have no idea who Mike Middleton is.

The trouble is, your chances most likely drop below 10% if your college football coach has football at 5th on his priority list.

            1) He never said it's 5th on HIS priority list, did he? Maybe he did, but it seems like he was referring to the players

            2) Even if he did mean it for himself, I doubt that's the truth.

            3) A good player at BYU under Bronco these last four years has every bit as good of a chance to make the NFL, if not better, as he does at Utah. I don't the numbers, but I bet they bear this out.

He is the head of the Cougar Club and top Legacy schmoozer. Really nice guy, btw.

Actually, in rethinking things, if every recruits dad thought like I did (i.e. made a rational decision...), Stanford would be a lot better at football and basketball.

Here is something I heard from a pretty reliable source. A highly recruited kid in a non football sport called the coach and asked if the coach had the same priority list as Bronco. If so, he didn't want his kid playing there.

Here is my thinking, if I have a very, very talented kid I want the coach to have as his number 1 priority making sure that kid will develop his talents to the highest level.

If my kid was a 4.0 student and going to law school, I wouldn't want him to go to a law school that openly stated learning to be a lawyer was number 5 on the law schools priority list.

I think any coach worth his salt would say faith, family, friends and education come first, but my question is why emphasize it. Shouldn't that be the responsibility of the kids parents and ecclesiastical leaders. I have always been consistent on this. When a kid is deciding on going on a mission or not, I think he should consult his parents and church leaders, not the football coach, unless of course he wants to on his own.

Mike is a great guy who has to do his job with handcuffs on.

I know there are plenty of donors who are quite happy with things. However, I do know of some who are as you say, kicking in bucks for the athletic programs and don't feel like those bucks should also be subsidizing the religion department.

I am pretty close with one Legacy donor that is...er......NOT happy with Bronco stating that football is #5. The loss to Utah, the piss poor showing at the Vegas Bowl, and Bronco's crazy statement has put him in a mostly crabby mood in the month of December.

That kind of statement does wonders for recruiting. What is Bronco thinking?

Sadly, as you say, he is handcuffed. I honestly think he is stating the actual truth about football's priority at BYU. Bummer.

Well I am pretty close with someone that is..... well you could say close the the program as well.

This individual has been in a very crabby mood since early November for these same reasons....

He was also crabby because you were driving about 40 mph on the freeway and taking forever to get home. "Oh, I'm so scared! It is overcast outside!"

That is the most disheartening thing I have read in some time.

I am interested in how things go over this next year.

I gotta say that, although I haven't read the quote in its context (having only seen it here), I respect Bronco more for this approach. Let's be honest: football is not the most important thing in life, especially for people who consider mortality some kind of probationary period leading up to a happily-ever-after.

Maybe Bronco could have been more nuanced - football is priority number one during practice and games - or explained his position better (for the sake of fundraising, at least), but I respect this approach from a religious school. Ideally, a school would produce good students, good citizens, good spouses/parents, good church-members, and good football players, but Bronco is just putting it all into perspective.

It's a gutsy position that many people don't agree with, and I'm glad he's not coaching my favorite team, but at least Bronco is a man of principle. I find that commendable.
