  • Charlie Weis fired

Charlie Weis is out after five seasons as Notre Dame coach.

A member of Notre Dame's coaching staff told ESPN's Joe Schad on Monday that the staff was informed of the decision in an afternoon meeting.

The New York Daily News first reported that Weis was out. The Associated Press also is reporting that Weis has been ousted.

Notre Dame players have scheduled a mid-afternoon players meeting that will include a vote on whether they want to play in a bowl game after a 6-6 season. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick has said he will consider the players' wishes in deciding on a bowl trip.

The member of the coaching staff told Schad a decision hasn't been made on an interim coach; Notre Dame will wait to see whether the players will decide if they want to participate in a bowl game first.

Weis was not in his office early Monday, though there were no announcements about whether he will return for a sixth season. Swarbrick has said he will make that decision within the next few days.

Anyone know the exact number on his buyout? I thought I heard between 15-18 million. If so that is unbelievable.

Pat Forde: Bob Stoops is their top candidate. Stoops has been denying it, but every active coach is obligated to deny it in November.

I'd like to congratulate Mark Mangino, who today becomes the biggest name in college ball.

HUH??? Let the players decide if they want to go Bowling?? Is this for real???

ND is no longer at the top but they are acting like they are. Snubbing any bowls etc is pretty high and mighty for a bottom of the drum team...

It will be interesting to see if this team decides to go Bowling...

I still think ND is making a stupid move here. I dislike Weiss, but ND is a different animal, and the coach who goes there needs a little more time.. IMO..

Stoops would be a perfect fit. He's already shown he can get blown out in meaningful bowl games.

Utah plays at Notre Dame next year. Too bad that the BCS homers now have a built-in "first year coach" excuse.

Utah plays Pittsburgh next year too, but I'm not familiar enough with their team to know what their excuses could be. They look dang good at 9-2 right now.

So weis will land a job, somewhere. Not that he really needs it anymore, but I am sure he is competitive. Maybe UNLV will get him.

UNLV has shown interest in Dennis Franchione and Dirk Koetter.

Someone asked Pat Forde on Twitter today if he thinks Stoops is a home run if ND can land him. Forde's response was, "urban only sure home run. And Urban isn't leaving Florida."

                        Francione could be scary.

It is Michigan all over again for the Utes. I think Notre Dame success next depends on Jimmy Clawson. If comes back, the new head coach has a chance to have a good season. Their is talent on the Fighting Irish. Charlie Wies just wasn't a good college football coach. He couldn't make the transition. I think make the transition from the pros to college can be pretty hard as well. There are ton of rules that you have to adjust to that aren't there at the pro level.

Clausen and Tate are as good as gone. They don't/won't have a defense next year either, so I can't see them passing on 1st round money. Claussen would likely be the highest QB on the board.

I agree both of them would be stupid to stay with a new HC coming in. Not to mention the fact that CHarlie claims to have been contacted by at least 6 NFL teams about the O-coordinator job, I could see him drafting Clausen and/or Tate as they know his system and the expectations.
