  • The MWC strikes a deal with the Independence Bowl

Located in Shreveport. It will no longer be the Big 12 #9 vs. the SEC #8, now it's the ACC vs. the MWC, the pecking order hasn't been announced. The ACC already has 8 tie-ins.

Last year, neither conference had enough eligible teams, so 7-5 Louisiana Tech and 6-6 Northern Illinois subbed. (The ACC somehow had 10 eligible teams last year, only Duke and Virginia missed out).

FINALLY, Hair Thompson lands a venue to get excited about

    Played December 28
    220 miles from TCU
1,430 miles from Salt Lake City

This bowl doesn't even deserved to be watched on TV, let alone attend in person.
    Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

        Payout is 1.1 mil.

FWIW the Vegas payout is 950K, while the Poinsettia, Armed Forces and New Mexico payouts are each 750K.

Ole Miss has the most appearances with 5. McNeese State has 3.

        YEE-HAW!!!

Possibly. The only site I found that listed each payout was Wikipedia, and upon second glance those figures are as of 2006.

Now shouldn't you be reading Pennoyer v. Neff?

I'm pretty pumped about this. Hopefully we will see a 9-3 BYU team get to take on a 6-6 Maryland team sometime in the future. Pretty cool.

Anything around 1M is all about the same. It barely pays for expenses. You split the rest nine ways. Small bowls aren't revenue producers.

Exactly who are you angry at? College football fans who don't pack a 60,000 seat venue at $100 per ticket or the rest of the nation who doesn't tune into the game so advertisers don't pay big bucks?

So with this new bowl, the team makes no money and the conference makes no money.... while the fans travel 1400 miles to a venue with no major airport.

Round trip filghts from SLC to Shreveport on Dec 27-29: $646
Same round trip to Dallas (200 miles away): $372

I went to Shreveport twice last year. It's like Wendover with a very smelly, black river.

serious question here: is there any tourism of note in Shreveport? Bowls are generally destination experiences...you go a day or so early to see the local sights, hang out, soak up the atmosphere, etc.

Would there be a reason to travel to Shreveport any earlier than 30 minutes prior to kickoff? I think I rank this bowl very high on the "undesirable holiday destination" list, along with Detroit and Idaho.

I don't understand how these bowls make any money whatsoever.

Shreveport is a casino city, with dinner cruises on the black sewer river. Drawing people from nearby Texarkana, Longview, and Rushton (college home of Karl Malone!)

Boo!!!! Hiss!!!! Detroit Rock City!!!! Plus you have Windsor right across the river (yeah that's right Canada with its lax moral standards in their strip bars, maple donuts and the beer store). Not to mention the casinos have sports books.
