This isn't meant to be a hate Bronco thread. I think he's a great coach and I don't think this affects the quality of coaching by Bronco, but to me it seems like he is not really passionate about football. In Jay's latest blog he notes that Bronco doesn't watch much NFL on Sundays and that in fact his wife watches more.

I'm sure this has been debated ad nauseum before I got here, but does Bronco really love this job? It seems like fans booing really get under his skin more than it should. I think fans booing is just part of the game, every team has those fans that boo even when things are going good. There is a couple that sits next to us at the BYU games. Whenever something good happens they hardly cheer, but as soon as Hall throws a pick they are up in arms and starting chanting for Riley Nelson. They're idiots, but they're going to be there even if the team goes undefeated. I think if Bronco likes his job more, it wouldn't bug him as much to hear the boobirds.

Sometimes I wonder if he has fun or if this is just a means to be able to retire early with his family in Hawaii or SoCal. I would also understand if he just needs to get away sometimes. If I had to talk about software and my job all week, I would probably go crazy too.

I used to be surprised hearing BB players saying after they were out of the playoffs, they didn't watch many games after that.

From what I read in the papers and what he says, he isn't someone I would pick out to hang out with. However, I know people who have been around him in various settings and they say he is a great guy and fun to be with. I will take the people who have been around him and what they say over the media personna. He probably enjoys coaching a lot more than we think.

I think he definitely seems like a great guy away from the game. I guess I'm just trying to get a feel of whether or not he really loves football and just wants to get his mind off things until he starts up again Monday, or if he really is just indifferent about football in general. I don't think the Bronco we see in the media is even close to the real Bronco at home.

He might just be suffering from the relatively common phenomenon that as soon as you start getting paid to do something it's not fun to do it, even if you used to love it.

I would probably go as far as to say that there are many college football coaches around the country that don't watch a lot of pro games. It is his day to take a break from it. All he does Monday through Saturday is watch, talk, plan and coach football. As much fun as football is, when you spend 10 to 12 hours a day doing something in regards to football I am sure any of us wouldn't mind doing something else one day a week. This is not uncommon at all for college coaches to not pay much attention to the games on Sunday.

I had a good friend who played football at BYU. He was not a fan of football. He knew nothing of the NFL. He didn't watch it and didn't care.

Wow for the dedication that I would think it would take to play on the football team. I would think that you would have to love football. I would think the football players would be in the eat, sleep, drink category.

It's kind of like if you were a gynecologist. At some point, you've seen too many hoo-hoos.

I just thought of a good analogy. I don't watch porn.

That I can understand, but to not watch or care about the NFL is crazy to me.

Playing sports is different than watching sports. There are all sorts of people, competitive or otherwise, that enjoy playing more than watching the sport they play. I don't think it's that unreasonable that a person that spends at least 6 days and 80+ hours a week during the season to not feel all that interested in spending their scant free time watching more football.

I love college football and watch tons of it, but I don't give two craps about the NFL other than a mild interest in how BYU players are doing. I can't remember the last time I watched an NFL game from beginning to end, including the Super Bowls.

I spend the weekends working in my woodshop or doing yardwork.

I just think here is the top level of your sport or profession. Now I don't necessarily want to spend all my waking hours watching or studying my profession all the time, but when I get a chance to see someone that is really really good at what I'm doing, I will definitely take the time to watch. I appreciate what they are doing.

I have no problem with not watching every Sunday, but to not know anything of the NFL and not care about it is crazy to me.
