He got sick at a comp in Portugal. Traveled to Puerto Rico for the next comp but pulled out due to illness and flew home to Hawaii. He had a layover in Dallas and checked into a hotel where he was found dead of dengue fever. He leaves behind a pregnant wife. 
He will be missed. He was one of my favorite surfers, a haole kama'aina from Kaui and member of the infamous Wolf Pack. He was a three time world champion and had epic battles with Slater.
