I think this is as good as a hire as Boise St. could have hoped for. This is a good get and a good stepping stone for Harsin.

Except Texas is also one of the best coaching jobs. Of course, I also thought the same thing about USC and all they could get was Sarkisian.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

That was a damn good hire. I wonder who Arkansas State picks up now? That place is hot for up and coming coaches. I feel for them though. Hugh Freeze, Gus Malzahan and now Harsin.

SC had 4 HCs this season.

What a terrible career move for Harsin. Following a legend. It's practically impossible for him to do what Chris Petersen did. It's practically impossible for Petersen to duplicate it, which is why he left. Also, eight good years following over a hundred as a community college-plus makes Boise a demonstrably better job than Arkansas State? I undestand Harsin is from Boise, and that exlains it, but this makes no sense at all as a career move. He will never, ever give Boise fans what they have experienced with Petersen. He will never give them enough. [Note to self: Mark this thread for annual swishes.]

Records since Boise became a 4 year school:

                    Tony Knapp: 71-19
                    Jim Criner: 59-21
                    Lyle Setencich: 24-20
                    Skip Hall: 42-28
                    Houston Nutt: 5-6
                    Dirk Koetter: 26-10
                    Dan Hawkins: 53-11
                    Chris Peterson: 92-12

Seems the last 4 names on that list have done a nice job using Boise to propel themselves to other jobs. Also looks like they were successful long before Peterson.

                    • I agree with you that it is improbable Harsin enjoys the same success as Coach Pete. That being said, I think that it is a great place for Harsin. His home and roots are in Boise. He went to HS and college in Boise. He spent the majority of his young coaching career in Boise. He is a familiar face for a program that is teetering on being a team that is rebuilding and a team that is starting to spiral back to irrelevance. As any fanbase, there are going to be cries for his head if he does not match or surpass what Peterson was capable of achieving, however, if he is able to keep Boise State relevant, remain competitive in the division and keep the money rolling into the University, he will be there as long as he wants to be. Boise State is a great stepping stone for an up-and-coming coach.

Additionally, absent a once-in-a-lifetime QB, Petersen did very well, but not a lot better than some of his predecessors.

Had no idea Houston Nutt was there. And had a sucky record...

Up to/through Hawkins, Big Sky records. There weren't any Orange Bowl wins over Oklahoma.
