  • Three LDS First Round Draft Picks?

I find it interesting that we will likely have three LDS picks in the first round. I can't think of another time when that has happened?

Also that only one of the three attended BYU. I don't expect BYU to get every one of the top tier LDS talents, but we likely need to do better than a 3rd of them.

Bronco really seems to dislike top talent, highly ranked talent. Which makes sense when you look at his own background. He often gets a lot out of the talent level that he does bring in. However, I do wonder if we have plateaued as a program. We are very competitive with most teams, can win occasionally in the really big games - but we can't consistently win those big games. Also many of the top talent we have brought in have left.

I think the 1 of 3 first rounders statistic to be telling. If we don't end up getting and keeping 60-70% of the top tier LDS talent, will we ever reach the next level?
Tell Graham to see. And tell Merrill to swing away.

I don't think Bronco hates highly ranked talent. However, I think we have solid evidence that a lot of the highly ranked talent that has come to BYU have proven to be lazy, entitled and ultimately incapable of playing up to their dude-in-a-basement-watching-Youtube expectations.

I hope this thread dies a quick death
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

If you really want to blow your mind - consider that the only one BYU got was not one they recruited. He had to convince the coaches to give him a shot as a walk on.

So - three first round picks (potentially), and the only one BYU got was the one who no one else wanted either.

There is hope for the future.... Bronco has stepped up his recruiting by finally signing up for a twitter account.

I had an email exchange with Bronco awhile back. Well, it was actually with his secretary because I don't think he does email. I would be surprised if he didn't delegate out his tweets to some intern.

EDIT: hey, I just noticed this was a totally spontaneous and unpremeditated humblebrag!

Wait, if I just pointed it out, does it mean that now the humblebrag has failed? Okay, never mind.

We have come a ways from the "we will get all the tope LDS talent". Several epistles were written on CB on the subject.

I think everyone, well most everyone has come back to reality as to how every LDS kid will react to FB being the 5th priority.

He dislikes top talent so much that he
                • gave Ziggy a spot on the team even though he'd never played a down of football,
                • offered Manti, who chose to attend another school, and
                • offered and signed Star, who was subsequently rejected for academic - not talent-related - reasons.

I don't see how that supports the assertion.

I recall when fishing with my grandfather him asking me to show him the fish I had caught for the day. As I was showing the trout I told him about the huge one that got away. He said, "I didn't ask about the one's you let go but the ones you have in your creel."

There's ability to fish, and there's also affinity to fishing.

I'm confident that Bronco likes top-tier talent. At the same time, I'm not sure that top-tier talent cares much for Bronco.

I have long believed BYU has plateaued but it's certainly not because Bronco doesn't want top talent and to suggest that is moranic. He loves to act as pimp to the underdog but like any coach he covets the playmaker.

Refresh my memory. Who lost a bunch of playing time due to the presence of Fowler?

Andrew Rich seems to be the most obvious. But really, anybody on the team at the time could have played safety more effectively than Fowler, so in that sense, everybody.
