There are lots of accurate things that shouldn't be said. If he had said "our offense sucks and we can't do anything about that so our best hope is to punt well to win the field position game" that would be even more accurate. But that would be even more stupid.

Who knows, maybe that's what he said and the sideline reporter bailed him out.

Jeff could be right, of course, but as stated, it was a lame thing to say. Bronco says a lot of dumb things. You know this.

Halftime interviews are stupid. Halftime interviews have a wonderful habit of bringing out the best responses out of coaches of all descriptions.

It wasn't a dumb thing to say! It was right on the money, as the events of the second half proved. Our offense was hopeless due to an inexperienced QB and a horrible OL. They key to the game was to get field position and let the defense with the game.

Like FM said, it was accurate, but dumb.

Reading stories from San Diego paper about last night's game in SD airport; Now DiLuigi's non-overturned fumble went for a touchdown in 2010

And there were now two BYU alums in Replay Booth in 2010; Chad Bunn is a proud USU alum, actually.

The delusion is so profound. Aztec fans truly believe that Chad Bunn was solely responsible for the call and that he had BYU's backing and support to not overturn that call. It's amazing, actually

Haddow sighting on the first one.

I was looking forward to SDSU whining after the replay I'm glad they didn't disappoint.

                  • Given that all of the damage inflicted on the Aztecs last night was by non-RMs, and that the OL where RMs were most plentiful was perhaps the weakest element of last night's performance, the age argument is pretty strange. In addition to the stars (KVN, Hoff, Ziggy, etc.), I think Jamaal is quite young, perhaps even a freshman, but that never gets mentioned by the announcers.

Brigham Young Cougars vs. San Diego State Aztecs - Recap - December 20, 2012 - ESPN
This punting thing needs to be addressed and some of you should really pull your heads out. First off, his comments were not prophetic, they turned out to be mostly inaccurate.

Let's assume for a moment, giving him the benefit of the doubt, that they were prophetic - if your plan to improve your offense is to rely on good punting, you should probably be fired on the spot. A punt happens on fourth down and the point of a punt is to give the other team the ball. If anything a good punt is a defensive play (and ultimately it was the defense that benefited most from the solid punt game).

Regarding the supposed accuracy of the comment as the game progressed. The first TD of the second half came after an interception BYU threw at the goal line pinning SDSU against their own endzone. It was after that INT that KVN scored the TD. There was no punt either directly or indirectly involved in the score. The second TD happened after a kickoff, followed by a SDSU fumble, then a Jamal Williams run into the endzone. Once again, punting was not directly or indirectly responsible for that TD. The third TD, the pick six by KVN, came after a good punt by Stephensen. There, the defense scored, perhaps assisted by the good punt.

In terms of offense produced I'd rank it something like this:

                      1 - KVN
2 - the defense in general - getting pressure on the QB and causing fumbles
3 - James Lark throwing a timely pick on a play that may not have scored a TD anyway, that ultimately led to a TD by the defense.
4 - Jamal Williams, who actually scored a TD

In a nutshell, one could argue the punt game assisted on one TD, but was not directly responsible for any points.

The punt game and special teams in general, is very important in most football games as field position is a big part of the game. It is not an offensive strategy and wasn't a vital part of BYU's scoring last night.

                      Sheesh.

Again, the field position that led to scores was only achieved by the punt game on one of the three second have scores.

                          lol. Shot birds flutter.

First of all, as I mentioned above, you have no idea exactly how that question was posed to Bronco nor do you know exactly how he worded his response. So getting so carried away about how dumb the comment was relative to the word "offense" is .... well .... really dumb.

Second of all, let's repeat this quote.

                          SDSU coach Rocky Long agreed.
"I don't know who got the Most Valuable Player, but I'll tell you who I thought the Most Valuable Player was, was their punter," Long said.
Punting was a huge key to the victory.

                          • Here is the bottom line: Bronco made what appeared to an odd response when related as a second-hand account. Many of you had a field day mocking him about it. He ended up being right on the money, making your comments look silly in hindsight. Rather than laughing it off and moving on, you are going to extreme lengths to rationalize your mocking.

He wasn't right on the money, Jeff. Two of their three scores came as a result of plays that were not even indirectly related to the punting game.

Was the punting game important? Is it important in a lot of football games? Of course. But the majority of the points BYU scored had nothing to do with the punt game. Sorry, just being honest!

Punting was a key to victory. But not to offensive performance or to scoring points that led to victory.
