  • Nobody Is Loyal; NIL and the Transfer Portal Era

I don't think anyone has a problem with college athletes making money off their athletic abilities. But there has to be some regulation, and soon, or the monster is going to eat its own tail. We all love college sports, but until congress steps in and somehow regulates this, it is going to get worse. This is a place to discuss and share ideas and theories on how the current system can be modified and improved.

A salary cap seems logical. Give each school a limit on how much it can pay to build a roster. I also think it would be wise to set a cap on how much any single player can get. Which would (theoretically, at least) alleviate the concerns of a player leaving for more money--if one school is paying someone a "max share" then that player is less likely to leave to another school if the amount they can offer is the same. I say theoretically, because under the table payments are going to happen. I think you have to have strict enforcement regarding under the table payments--any offense warrants the death penalty. It has to be something severe enough that schools/boosters won't dare go near it.

Another idea that has been thrown out into the zeitgeist is a limits on NIL deals if you enter the portal. i.e. if you are currently signed with a school, and you enter the portal, there could be a limit on how much another school can pay you for the next season. Again, something to reward loyalty and incentivize players to stay put. Exceptions to this could be if you are moving from a FCS school to a FBS school, or from a G5 school to a P4 school.

Also, perhaps, limits on the number of times you can enter the portal. If your head coach leaves, the portal opens to you. Otherwise, you can move up and down (FCS/G5 to P4 or vice versa) without limitation, but you only get one lateral move.

    Let's hear your thoughts.

    Great thread idea.

I just noted that the Washington QB that signed a contract but now wants out a few days later to go to LSU (presumably) - Washington is refusing to release him to the portal. I guess there is some step in the process of entering the portal where the university plays a role.

Yep. Feels like Kiffin and crew probably reached out and said "you're getting 4M at Washington? We'll make it 5M" and the kid is now trying to back out with Washington.

Which brings up another point. These need to be treated as binding contracts. I haven't seen an NIL contract, but I'm sure they have clauses in them that allow a school to not pay if a player gets kicked off the team, is academically (lol) ineligible, is arrested, or refuses to play for any reason other than injury. Are these all 1-year deals? Can you sign a 4-year NIL deal? Do schools even want that? Do players?

A funny part of all of this is that it looks like each of the schools that Sam Leavitt has looked at have signed other QBs. Would be hilarious if he got left out in the cold.

Reforms I am in favor of:

          1. portal is closed until seasons completely over.
1.a. CFP is finished on New Year’s Day.
          2. Annual Salary cap.
          3. no agent to agent comms until the player is in the portal.
          4. NIL agents must be certified.
          5. Penalty for school and player of 2 or 3 are violated.

The problem with 2 is that it will just e courage boosters to go underground again. At least in the current situation, there’s some transparency as to who is doing what. Same with 3, honestly.

As someone who has some of Dallin/Sam Leavitt's extended family living in my stake (and used to live in my ward), I can't tell you how happy that would make me. I love his relatives, but from all I've heard, Dallin/Sam's family drinks their own piss and thinks it's lemonade.

Why can't the guy just pull a Retzlaff and withdraw from UW and enroll at LSU at his leisure?
              Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

This is one of the biggest question marks for NIL. How long will rich donors continue to shell out millions of dollars for the simple joy of watching the team win on Saturdays?

Troy Aikman has already said he's done writing NIL checks to UCLA.

I've been wondering the same thing, and just NIL, but also coaches salaries.

FWIW, I stopped writing NIL checks before it was cool to stop writing NIL checks.

With NIL, he can actually make more at BYU than he would in the NFL. And, I submit that LJ's value to the universe is greater as a starting RB in Provo than it is as a 4th round pick fighting for reps on an NFL squad. The college game benefits from LJ playing another year in college. LJ benefits by maximizing financial return on his talent.

Facts. If you aren't a 1st or 2nd round pick, stay in college and grab that check and degree.

Go make your late round/UDFA money later. Chase Roberts did it this year and was smart because of it.
