Time to bury the 2024 season and move on. 214 days until college football starts again. Way too early ESPN Top 25 is out:

    2025 Way-Too-Early college football Top 25 rankings - ESPN

Four Big 12 teams including highest ranked BYU at #9. Ohio State projected #1 again with the best team money can buy. Will the SEC rise up and return to competing for the championship or is their run of dominance truly over in the new NIL paradigm?

This is such a big deal - getting ranked high early on makes all the difference, as long as you can sustain the winning.

Is there any chance they move the playoff games up a bit? I’m sure the logistics would be very difficult as they’d likely have to shorten the regular season, but having the championship game at the same time as the NFL divisional round really made me not care about the game. It seems like getting this all wrapped up prior to the wildcard round would be best.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Here we go again. Whinning about NIL when Ohio St. isn’t even ranked first. Hell. Look at their roster top to bottom and they only had 3-transfers last year. Howard, Downs and the OL from Bama. Two being Graduate transfers. This team is home-grown.

Want to compare NILs. Texas, Bama, Georgia are all ahead of them and this year, Oregon was top in spending and several other schools before OSU.

Be honest. It’s because Ohio St. that you truly didn’t care. lol

To an extent that is true with me. I’ll probably get interested in games after new years when a non P2 team that isn’t Notre Dame, Florida state, or Clemson is involved.

With the changes to nil/portal/12 team playoff, I can see a change where that happens. But there is just as likely of a scenario where the blue bloods of the sport become bluer.

That scenario isn’t very interesting to me and is not good for college football.

In all other D1 sports we have a large bracket for the Natty. I am glad they are moving that direction finally. We see such pull for “Cinderella Stories” and how it plays out. I would consider a 8th seed to run the table to be very interesting but also recognize they deserved to be ranked higher but 2-losses will get you ranked low. I would love to see a SMU, BYU or Boise St. run the table. The excitement would be there.

This does cause concern that the regular season no longer matters but I don’t think what we saw this year happens often. Last time was when the Buckeyes ran the table in the very first 4-Team CFP where we played with our 3rd string QB..

The solution is to cap the regular season at 11 games, scrap the conference championships, expand the field to 28 teams, and play the playoff games from Thanksgiving Weekend through New Years. Then have the Natty on the Monday before the NFL playoffs. The money the teams lose from dropping a game gets made up in revenue sharing from the extra playoff games.

Imagine how awesome the Friday and Saturday after TG would be with 8 first-round playoff games happening over those two days.

A field of 28 is too big, IMO. But, 16 teams and as outlined, and I'm with you 100%.

I meant 24. Icould go for 16. Ideal would be 24 with 8 BYES. So there are 8 first round games, then 8 second round games. But I could live with 16 and no BYEs.

The NCAA basketball tournament has 68 teams and regularly includes teams with near 0.500 records, but there is still complaining every year by teams and conferences that teams were snubbed. In spite of BYU not getting enough run in the playoff discussion, I thought the 12-team version was awesome. And ultimately if we wanted to be in, we shouldn't have lost to Kansas at home. The current 12-team model surprised me with how well it struck a balance between regular season performance and keeping a greater number of November games nationally relevant. But I wouldn't trade diluting the value of regular season wins even further for even more relevant November games. When you have 3-4 teams in each major conference fighting for playoff spots down the stretch, that's a lot of important games each week. I don't think having twice as many of those games but having the battle be between 4 loss teams is an upgrade.

I'm just an old man yelling at the clouds as I know Americans will always want a bigger playoff and the money is there to be made so it will happen. But I'm hoping we get one more year with no adjustments at least.

The first question on this evening's Jeopardy Tournament of Champions was something like, "This school's Jewish quarterback, Jake Retzlaff, is one of only three members of the tribe at the school." I got it right!
