I have a couple of thoughts:

    1. I want the best guy to start. Right now it looks like Heaps is that guy. However Nelson (other than Saturday) has had some good days in camp including an awesome day today. Me thinks if Nelson has a few more days like today Bronco's decision is that much harder. Note that a lot of Nelson detractors were starting to warm up towards Riley after last Friday. Saturday sent them back to their previous opinion.

    2. There is a lot of camp left. As the defensive scheme becomes more complex Heaps may struggle. Running the O against a base D is one thing. Running it when stunts and blitzes are coming at you in a hundred different ways is another thing entirely. Heaps my do great but this is where playing a true freshman can get you in trouble.

    3. From what I've seen of Heaps he doesn't seem to be the type to take his ball and go home if he isn't chosen. However, if for whatever reason Nelson is chosen and Heaps starts moaning and threatening to transfer I say good riddance. I do not want that guy on my team no matter how highly touted he is and I'm reasonably sure Bronco doesn't either.

I wouldn't compare any PAC team to bYu.

Heaps' stated goal (correct me if I'm wrong) is to play in the NFL. He has also chosen to forgo a mission in order to get early playing time at the collegiate level to further progress toward the NFL end goal. If Nelson starts then, Heaps is faced with the possibility of starting as late as his Jr. year.

In todays college quarterback environment starting early and getting PT is paramount. As such my opinion is that he, in his own best interests, should transfer if he doesn't start.

It seems pretty obvious to everyone besides Jerry...er, Bronco.

I'm not doubting you, I just haven't seen it. We also have Jan Jorgenson telling us that his "former teammates" (guys on the team and guys attending practices) are all telling him that Heaps is the guy.
An interview with Logan that was linked on CB. It's still there if you want to go find it.

The other quote was from Jacobson. I posted it in one of the many Heaps threads.

There are about three people that think Riley should start, and they're all related to him.

Also seems like he thinks that Heaps will get most of the time but that Riley will be brought in to run "option-like" plays to "keep the defense on their toes".

Add to that that fact that the offense (which suited you perfectly) had to be revamped suit his mobility and lack of deep ball ability.

    Thanks, friend.

First, I seriously doubt (but could be wrong) that Bronco would tell Heaps he had "a great shot at starting as a freshman." That seems totally opposite from what Bronco would tell any recruit. If Heaps came away with that idea, it was probably his own. IIRC, Bronco usually says something like "Everyone will be considered for every position based on worth ethic, blah blah blah."

I think Heaps really wants to start, I think he realized when he signed that it would be an open competition with Max gone, but I don't think the coaches would nudge him into thinking that he had the edge (I also realize you may not be espousing that exact sentiment).

    1. Heaps & Family suffered a lot for passing up Washington for BYU. A lot. I wouldnt characterize it as persecution, but I think that family fled the area. They are anticipating some sort of payback for their suffering.

    2. Hans sees Riley Nelson as mistake and error-prone, although he doesn't attribute it to the player personally; more that Nelson's seat-of-the-pants scrambling gives rise to lots of sacks and chain turnovers. Any QB with that style of play has huge risk/reward. Hans is particularly irate that Riley is showing so well during fall camp, because Jaime Hill is spending zero time instructing his 1s to counter Riley's scrambling, since that is so easily defended in a game situation. I think he is worried that Riley looks good now, which will propel him to the first string position, and when faced with a couple of defensive spies in a real game will cough up the ball all day long. Faced with this scenario, Heaps & Co will be complaining loud and long.
Thanks for using all of the hacked material I was saving .

But seriously, thanks for defending me also. You are a true friend.

Actually now that you bring it up I think that that Heaps' parents could really be put-off if they aren't handled properly. Does Bronco seem like a guy who is willing to placate massive egos?

Good insights KL. I know with a pretty high degree of certainty though that (a) the Heaps are committed to BYU but (b) there will be genuine displeasure (not just disappointment) if Riley ends up starting unless he is clearly the QB more likely to deliver Ws (which he's running out of time to prove if he's going to be that guy).
