I would actually love to have Nelson on Utah's roster. He would make a very good safety or slot receiver. He would be killer in Utah's running game as well at the slot receiver position. Nelson has lot of skill and athleticism and if he would give up his dream to play QB he could have a really good college career. I think Cain is better at Nelson in going through his progressions and has a little big stronger of an arm. Cain isn't much better than Nelson, but he is good enough that he would edge him out on Utah's roster.

I actually think Nelson and Cain are very similar. Nelson is a much better athlete than he is given credit for. He would be a decent slot receiver or safety.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostI'm not sure any of this matters as Heaps is going to be a starter. I have a hard time believing that Nelson will start for BYU when he wouldn't even start for Utah St had he stayed and would be 3rd string at Utah. I won't be surprised if Nelson ends up 3rd string at BYU. Although, it looks like BM is going to be smart enough not to name him 3rd string early enough in camp that he will transfer, like Whittingham did with Louks.
I wouldn't blame Heaps for transferring if he was forced to sit behind someone as bad as Nelson, but I doubt that he would transfer.

You said it. Pat White is not near the athlete or qb that Pryor is and he was a second round pick.Originally posted by RedSox View PostMaybe I'm a complete idiot....but I think he'll be a late draft pick...free agent.

Well, if he can put together a season like Vince Young's last year, you'll definitely be right.Originally posted by Hot Lunch View PostWell there are idiots in the NFL front offices. See the retards that drafted Tim Tebow. I am not a fan of Pryor but I would be surprised if he was drafted later than the second round. Scouts will go crazy over his athleticism.

The Heaps/Nelson competition reminds me a lot of Hall vs Cooper....granted that Nelson has shown better than Cooper did, however As someone who has covered BYU for 8 years, I'd be shocked if Nelson were named as the outright starter at this pointhttp://twitter.com/gurneytbsall I heard on the radio while driving home was how Nelson closed the gap today, while he had a good day today, I didn't see anything that......indicated that he's anywhere different in the QB race as he was after Saturday. Exactly 3 of his reps were against the 1s on defense... ...while he did well, it should be noted that Heaps had all his reps against the 1s and had a lot of dropped passes ending his sets

I am slowly converting to the tribe of Tebow. I may be retarded.Originally posted by Hot Lunch View PostWell there are idiots in the NFL front offices. See the retards that drafted Tim Tebow. I don't know what the point was. But if he came in with an expectation that he would start as a true freshman (and knowing Bronco's normal approach to promising players time), then he has deluded himself.Originally posted by wally View PostBut wasn't the point of skipping his mission to play (start) ASAP?
Besides, if he thinks he's good enough to start as a freshman, think of what a year in the system would do for him.

Yeah, but this isn't a Matt Cassel situation either. At worst Heaps would sit for two years and then start for two years. Cassel never made a single start as QB.Originally posted by wally View PostBut that's the point. Matt Cassel is the extreme exception to the rule. Plus as Hot Lunch already pointed out, BYU is no USC.

I guess I don't understand your point, then. If Nelson came into this season will all this advantage and edge of experience (playing at USU, backing up last year, etc.), why hasn't that manifest itself? He doesn't seem to be performing better than Heaps, he doesn't seem to grasp the offense better than Heaps, he doesn't seem to be doing anything better than Heaps other than running the ball. What has his experienced translated into, exactly?Originally posted by Shaka View PostThere's no theory about it. When you prepare for a team the quarterbacks get the same information and watch the same film. Then they go on the practice field and the scout team simulates what the other team does. The starter gets the most reps but as last year's backup Nelson got all the same info, watched the same film, and got the same spiel from the coaches as Max. He also got the backup reps.
This is the stuff a freshman, even one who came in the spring, hasn't yet experienced. Having spent a season in the system is one advantage Nelson has over Heaps.
He spent a lot of time on the field at USU, yet was benched toward the end. He played at USU, went through game prep all last year, but when he got in games looked like it was his first time ever in a pocket. And now with all this experience, he still struggled big time in game-like situations this fall. I don't see where his experience is giving him any advantage or will give him any advantage going forward.Last edited by MarkGrace; 08-17-2010, 04:04 PM.
