    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I figured out why I hate the NFL kickoff so much. A while ago I remember reading something by a Sci-Fi fan where the author focused on the importance of the author adhering to the established set of rules within the story. The rules within the story can be outlandish, but once established they have to be consistently followed. If not then it leads to a breach of trust between the creator and audience. So Batman can't suddenly fly to get out of a tough spot. Or Ironman shouldn't be able to function in an atmosphere deprived of oxygen.

In football there's a rule of the line of scrimmage. At every point in a game the ball is placed at point of progress, either through efforts of one team or as mandated by the rules (kickoffs, safety kicks). One team is on one side of that line and the other team is on the opposite side. That line is sacred and can't be crossed until an action is taken by the team controlling the ball. The new kickoff rule completely violates these rules. First, they place the ball behind the line of scrimmage, creating two points of demarcation. Second, the artificially created line of scrimmage can't be crossed until control of the ball transfers to the other team. It's unnatural and violates the rules upon which the game has been established. If they can change something so fundamental to the game, then what else can be changed? It's unsettling. I hate it.

Vintage front office move by the Cincinnati Bengals. The football gods gifted them an undrafted rookie punter who, with one more punt, would be leading the NFL in average and net punting yards so naturally they decide to bring back one of the worst punters in the league last year.

Phew. The Bengals waived Robbins and kept Rehkow.
