  • The NHL

I cam't remember a thread dedicated just to the NHL so here we go. That group of playoff games yesterday was great, three OT games and Seattle giving the defending champs all they could handle. Playoff hockey is the best.

There is nothing more intense than playoff hockey.
The Flames and Canadiens didn’t make it this year so the only team I follow is the Oilers and they always terribly underperform in the playoffs. This year looks like no exception.
Our exchange student went to the same high school as a New Jersey Devil, so we are cheering for them. It will be tough for them to get past the Rangers though.

I doubt it will be an expansion team. Maybe the coyotes?

If I recall correctly, in the presser for MLB to Utah, it was mentioned that the Rocky Mountain power site could accommodate both an MLB stadium and NHL arena....

No- it will 100% be an expansion team. There is some chatter about picking Houston since it's a large city and all the usual arguments about television audience etc. And it certainly wouldn't be the Coyotes, who are so dead set about staying in Phoenix they are about to put a privately funded $2B complex in Tempe, which is an awesome move for them. I can't believe they ever tried to have a successful franchise all the way out in Glendale. I guess the Cardinals tried to build in Tempe, too, before Phoenix got jealous and threatened litigation over some accord between the two cities and that's why they ended up all the way out in BFE.

Speaking of the Coyotes, I went to one of their last games of the season a couple weeks ago vs. the Kraken and those guys are on a freaking roll. I wouldn't be surprised if they beat the Avalanche.

Connor Effing Bedard in Chicago. Last first pick won 3 cups. Bedard should win at least 6 cups in Chicago.

Gutted. Tempe voted to not replace a landfill with a mega hockey stadium/shopping/hotel complex that is fully independently funded. Great job, dipshits.

Hopefully the Coyotes have some contact w the city Mesa or the Salt River tribe and can come to some kind of terms, or it's sayonara, Coyotes.

Sorry man. It also sounds like there is already smoke about Salt Lake City for relocation.

Stupid move by the voters in Tempe

This specific area leaves a little wiggle room. They could either possibly build in mesa or the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian reservation- each location just a few miles/ a couple freeway exits away from the formerly proposed site in Tempe. The latter is probably my preferred option, but Mesa could make a case, too, since the new hockey complex would likely be a stone's throw from the Cubs' state-of-the-art mega facility they built for Spring Training. I hope they stick around.

If I'm being realistic, though, Utah would be a fantastic home for NHL, but I don't think Ryan Smith wants to buy the Coyotes, and I don't think the owners want to sell him the Coyotes. I still think they are committed to Arizona with the size of the investment they were prepared to make to land in Tempe. Mesa or Salt River will be substantially cheaper, not having to rehab landfill, of course, although land value/leasing might make up for it.

I think Ryan Smith wants a franchise and the NHL wants him to have a franchise. I see an expansion team in Utah's future.

I agree that Utah and the NHL are a good fit. It would be nice to see the great Connor Bedard play every year.

Just got a mailer from the president of the Coyotes.

I think they ought to build on the Res, stop calling it Arizona Coyotes and go full-tribal. Salt River Pima-Maricopa Coyotes.

Give SLC a new franchise. New franchises seem to be better than established teams.

                              Ha.

That said, the Delta Center is not good for hockey. I'm guessing Ryan Smith wants to build a new arena, but I really hope he doesn't want to put it out in the burbs (like the old prison site). I would LOVE to see a new arena at the Rocky Mountain Power site with a new MLB stadium. That seems to be the best option, IMO
