  • Kap is killing it with his legs.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Yep, Green Bay is coming straight up field and he's just slipping out of the pocket and finding lots of Green. Capers might have to assign a spy or blitz less.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

      • Kal might end up with 200 yards rushing. Has a QB ever done that in the NFL?

No run game, mediocre O-line play, sub par defense...Aaron Rodgers deserves better for his entire career.

            • It doesn't matter, but that was a horrible call. Jordy Nelson didn't even know where the ball was and he was the one that pushed off, not the CB.

The league must tighten up all this bullshit with PI and illegal contact. Also, these defenseless receiver penalties should be reviewable.

              • An interesting article in USA Today praises Alex Smith for being such a supportive teammate despite his obvious disappointment about the demotion. He has always come off as a very good human. While some resent the fact that the only reason he lost his job was because of an injury, I liked Smith's acknowledgement that that's the way his path to stardom began:

"Not at all," he said. "It's the nature of sports. [Kaepernick] got an opportunity and stepped up and made the most of it. That's how I got my start in college. The guy in front of me got hurt. I'd be pretty hypocritical to be upset about it."

Peter King article in SI tells a similar story.

                    • PFT has Smith expected to ask for his release prior to free agency. Peter King said on PTI that he didn't think the 49ers would grant that because he thinks they can get a mid-round pick for him. This will be an interesting game of chicken between Smith and the 49ers. On the one hand, he may walk away from 8.5 million next season. On the other hand, if they keep him and trade him, he has no or little say in where he goes...though it seems like Cleveland is the front runner.

                            • 49ers are furiously trying to throw out Alex Smith trade rumors. I'm not sure what they can get for him. The Cards, Browns and Chiefs are all in the mix, though I don't see the Cards being a viable trade partner and throwing out rumors regarding the Cards could backfire (what? You have no qualms about trading this guy to someone within the division? Obviously you're not worried about Smith coming back to haunt you guys twice a year).

The Chiefs seem, by far, the likeliest trade option. I would really like some combination of picks and players trading hands. If the 49ers could trade Smith and one of their 3rd round picks for Brandon Flowers -- though I'm not sure if the Chiefs would go for that. From a cap perspective, the Niners may not be willing to take on that contract. Alternatively, Eric Berry would also fill a need and he's still on his rookie contract but I think the Chiefs would probably be more hesitant to part with him. I think it would take at least Smith and their 2nd round pick to land Berry.

                              • And right after I post this, I find out that Smith HAS been traded to the Chiefs according to Jay Glazer and Tim Kawakami.

What I've heard is they're getting the Chiefs 2nd round pick this year and potentially their 2nd round pick next year. That's a much better haul than I was expecting for Smith. I don't expect the Chiefs fans will be happy.

I've lost count of the Niners' draft picks. I think they already had an absurd 14 picks in the draft before this and now it will be 15. This draft lacks players at QB and WR, but it's deep at DL and DB. The Niners need to see who falls into the middle of the first round (Star?) and they need to spend these picks to move up. They need either a NT or 3-4 DE along with a S or CB out of this draft. Chris Culliver might be moved to Safety and they're letting go of either Goldson or Whitner or both. They can swap their 1st round pick and a couple of their 3rd and 4th round picks to move up 10-15 spots to get a premium DL. They can then spend that high 2nd to draft a Safety. I like Tarrell Brown and Carlos Rodgers at CB, I however didn't like Donte Whitner in pass coverage and was lukewarm on Goldson. Premium safeties fall out of the first round frequently so the Niners should be able to pick a really good player right there.
