How bad is the NCAA situation for SC? Is all the Bush stuff from six years ago really going to hit the fan?

No, I don't think so. I really think this was similar to the Floyd situation....you show the NCAA contrition by getting rid of your coach (which is a pretty big sacrifice, actually).

The NCAA doesn't have anything good, which is why this has taken so long. The NCAA has to wait to see if Reggie or Pete get deposed and hopefully work off something they find in those depositions. As of now, they only thing that is certain is that Reggie's family lived rent free down near San Diego. That isn't SC's concern and the NCAA can't penalize SC for the actions of Reggie's parents. The cash allegations are probably true, but thus far the NCAA can't really even prove that and the SOL is moving....doesn't the NCAA have 5 years to do something once it finds out? Something along those lines.

I wonder whether this was a token offering to make the NCAA go away? In the long run, you would rather lose your coach and keep the Heisman and championships.

Pete has always wanted full control, so his jumping to seattle to simply be the head coach makes little sense. he could have done that, but to a better team and better situation, long ago.

College coaches who cheat should be debarred from coaching. Floyd is no better than a white collar criminal; he's like a tax cheat or an insider trader. Why is he still earning a living coaching? He ought to be a pariah. If Paul Allen is hiring Pete I'm disappointed. The Seahawks are the Portland Trailblazers of the NFL. USC should lose the championships and the Heisman.

          Let's look at some criteria:

          1. Local talent: check. Texas is loaded with more talent than any other state in the union.

          2. City: check. Austin's not Palo Alto, but it's nicer than every other city in the Big 12 and SEC. Few recruits going to avoid Texas because of Austin.

          3. Tradition: check. Texas is not in the top tier with SC, ND, Alabama and Ohio State, but it's right behind them.

          4. Facilities and fanbase: check. Stadium was recently renovated and now is the fourth largest stadium in the country (starting this season). More expansion is planned whereby it will become the largest stadium in the country. The current capacity is around 101k and Texas got more than 100k people at each of its home games this year.

          5. School quality: check. Texas is one of the best public universities in the country. It also has an enrollment of over 40k students, which is one reason why Austin is so great.

So, look at the other elite programs. Florida is in Gainesville and the school isn't as good UT. Ohio State doesn't have as much local talent, the fanbase is also a pain in the ass. ND doesn't have as much local talent and is in South Bend. Alabama displays the national championship trophy at the local Wal-Mart. Oklahoma is in Norman and probably did the same thing as Alabama back in 2000. Miami has a fickle fanbase and plays at a stadium that has a baseball diamond on it for the first third of the year.

That leaves USC and Texas as the top two college football jobs in the country.
Sorry, CMB. I'm as big a B12 homer as there is, but you're off base with this one.

Texas is a top five, no doubt, but it can't compete with USC and Notre Dame. The tradition and recruiting potential at those schools is simply unmatched. On top of that, USC plays in a conference where it is *the* only contender year-over-year. Notre Dame doesn't play in a conference at all. Their competition is what they make it, and they get their own auto-bid for the BCS. The path to big-time success at these two schools is much easier.

Seriously. Texas is a great job, but rarely, if at all, are you going to see it cited as tops.

What types of sanctions are facing USC? Forfeited wins? Reduced scholarships? Bowl ineligibility? And for how long?

nobody knows. But the evidence is so scant that it probably won't be much.

Wins are never forfeited. Just vacated.

It seems that Urban Meyer disagrees with you about ND.

Stoops and Les Miles and others, too. It's commonly regarded as the top job in college football, but that doesn't mean everybody's going to take it. A handful of coaches are already so successful at such elite programs that the slight increase in prestige and perks isn't worth the risk incurred.

It seems someone wants to keep their coach pretty bad. Whose next in line for USC?

Oregon State athletic director Bob DeCarolis is prepared to offer football coach Mike Riley a lifetime contract to remain at the school as a preemptive move against any offer USC could make to Riley if Pete Carroll does leave for the NFL next week, according to a report in the Oregonian.

Did anyone see Mark Sanchez's post-game interview yesterday? It was really funny and very classic stuff. He who laughs last.....

Speaking of wolfie, he was on KCAL 9 tonight and said that Kyle Whittingham's agent has made it known that he would be interested in the job. He also said Gary Patterson's agent has sent a similar message.

I think Patterson would be a great fit for USC.

I echo this plea. Recruiting top flight LDS kids would be even more difficult going up against kwhitt at USC.
