  • Rich Roll just dropped a podcast with the Iron Cowboy. Listened to about half this morning during my exercises and was duly inspired. Speaking of Rich Roll, I recently finished his book Finding Ultra. He talks about how in a short period of time he went from a sedentary lifestyle to running the UltraMan. While super impressive, he was a swimmer at Stanford so he had a great foundation of technique and understanding of endurance. The thing that stuck out to me was his experience on the inaugural EPIC5. They originally planned on 5 Iron distance triathlons on 5 islands in 5 days. Ultimately it ended up taking 7 days and Roll's description of it made it sound super miserable. At one point he ended up going apoplectic on his crew and all these people helping him out. Kind of funny because he projects a woo woo peace loving hippie image. Anyways. Helped me better understand how truly incredible the 50/50/50 accomplishment was. Not that I didn't realize before, but I was mostly focused on the athletic side of it. Lots of other things they had to endure and overcome.

    • Anyone following the Iron Cowboy in his quest to do 100 ironman distance triathlons in 100 days? Dude has an insane inner drive to do these things. I can't imagine even doing one let alone a couple back to back to back. He even had a crash a couple days ago and was back at it the next day. Thankfully for this challenge he's staying at home instead of spending the night riding in the back of a car while he's driven to another state like he did iwth teh 50/50/50.

I saw that he was starting that, but haven't paid any attention to it. What is he doing for the course(s)?

We were just talking about him yesterday at work. I've heard he does a lot of rides around Utah Lake. He lives not far from my house, so I guess I could go out and ride with him if I wanted to.

There are a lot of things I could do if I wanted to.

I could, but I'd only be able to maintain his pace for 100 yards or so.

We got my MIL one of those electric bikes. She loves it. Maybe you should look into something like that.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

His pace isn’t very fast, which is understandable when you do it for 100 straight days. In fact, I remember looking at his Ironman race times when he was just doing the races and he wasn’t even doing the single races at a blazing speed. He’s just an endurance freak and one that is fun to follow.

I just looked it up, and his average cycling pace is 16.56 mph. Plus I think that's in a peloton, so in theory that's easier to maintain. In practice I want to steer clear of riding in a group. But that pace is about where I was last week on my first ride this season.

If it's that slow, maybe I could keep up for 200 yards.

riding in a group does make it way easier. I remember riding with RC and Topper in a ride once where we were cruising along at 27 mph and I was working as hard as I do when I am going 15 by myself.

                            Maybe 300 yards, then.

That's practically a century. Get on down here!
