Tales of Bike to Work Day

As some of you long time listeners will recall, I am on the Walnut Creek Bicycle advisory committee. Among the many desirable benefits of this glamorous volunteer position is the opportunity to work at a local "energizer" station for Bike To Work Day which, as I am sure all of you know, is today.

In the past I usually worked the table passing out maps, water bottles, musettes with a few freebies (like a mini cliff bar) in it and bananas to those souls riding up on a bike. As a policy, however, we have never given musettes (these are canvas bags with a Bike to Work logo on them and a long strap meant to be worn over one shoulder while riding a bike; think of the feed bags the riders get in the Tour de France) to non-bike riders. They are a reward for riding a bike. So this morning I am setting up the table at 5:45 am when a strange woman comes up and demands a musette. Now I usually try to have a happy demeanor for these things, but i didn't get home from work the night before until about 11:00 pm and i was on too little sleep. Plus, she was very rude and demanding, as though my purpose was to give her whatever she wanted. To compound the matter, she was NOT riding a bike and she was odd, being one of those women who paint eyebrows above their actual eyebrows in dark makeup thinking, perhaps, no one will notice the double set.

So I tell her "Sorry, these are only for bike riders." She says, "Last year they gave me two! and I want one this year" I said "well, if you have two, do you need another one? Besides, my instructions (and this was true) are that musettes only go to riders today." She says "I don't want a musette, I want one of them bags." I am still trying to set stuff up and am losing patience, it being in short supply in my sleep deprived attitude. I say "Look, I am not going to give you one. You can come back later when the guy in charge is here and ask then if you want." I said it a bit sternly.

At this point, the lady goes a little crazy (er?). She starts parading back and forth across the Bart station hollering out that I wouldn't give her a food bag and how mean I was and telling everyone to stay away from me. This among the quiet early morning commute set stands out like a sore thumb. She carries on for about five minutes. I wanted to shove a musette down her throat, to be honest. After a couple of minutes she stormed off, still shouting, leaving me sheepish and regretful that I hadn't just given her a musette.

A few minutes later another really weird dude ambled up, sans bike, and asked for a musette. Even though he only had one set of eyebrows, I gave it to him anyway.

I used to work a lot of booths where we would give away free stuff to folks in a shameless attempt to try and get them to come and talk to us.

It always astounded me how entitled some (many?) folks are. Really - I'm giving you something for FREE. You didn't pay for it. No where in state or federal law or in the US Constitution does it say that I must give you free stuff. And yet you are going to complain if I run out, cry if I limit you to one, or whine if it isn't the exact color/style/size you were hoping for.

    IT WAS FREE!!!

By the way - the Performance Bike mailer I got at the beginning of the month said that National Bike to Work Week was May 16-20, with National Bike to Work Day being the 20th. Are they wrong? Is Walnut Creek in another country? What's the deal?

I just think it's great that they do ANYTHING to promote it. I'm not sure they have anything like that here - last year the news reported the SL County and SL City mayors riding their bikes to work, but I can't find anything promoting it anywhere.

Not even at the bike shops I've visited this week.

i was a phone call on a guy last week, and i addressed one of the gentlemen as "mr. [last name]." apparently this enraged him to the point where he demanded that i call him either "commander" or "doctor." some people.

Love it Creek. You showed nice restraint to a whack job. I guess she's lucky you didn't opened one up, and just pulled it down over her head...so, you got that going for ya.

Ha. We do a lot of community outreach with the public for my job and some days it's just too much to ask. I'm sure there's an official definition for this usage of "outreach" but all I ever see are people outreaching to grab what I'm passing out. As a side note, it's always a little disturbing out much free crap we're willing to distribute to raise awareness of Earth Day. Whatever.

This really surprises me. Salt Lake was always very assertive in promoting Bike to Work Week. It would be unfortunate to hear that they've gone away from that.

I volunteered down at the Utah Lake festival one year - focusing on the June Sucker projects they are doing. They had these passports for kids to take around from one booth to the next and get stamped, and in the end if they got enough stamps they wuold get a free t-shirt.

I was one of the guys checking passports and passing out shirts. It astounded me how angry some of the folks would get when we started running out of some of the sizes. Even more amazing was the obvious XXXL folks who insisted on a M size shirt - since they had earned it by getting the stamps - even though you know they are NEVER going to fit into that thing.

                Whatever is right...
