I hope so, but MSU has a history of turning it on come tournament time.

Agreed they are worse than mediocre MSU.

Still hoping for UCLA though. They are not great.

MSU is favored by 1-2 points against UCLA, depending on the sportsbook.

Michigan State's Quad 1 wins this season were:

    Home:
    (3) Illinois
    (4) Michigan
    (8) Ohio State

    Neutral-site:
    (49) Duke

    Road:
    (63) Indiana.

Michigan State's worst losses (in terms of NET) were

    Road:
    (92) Northwestern
    (77) Minnesota

All of MSU's other 10 losses came in Quad 1 games against teams who are in the NCAA tournament.

UCLA's Quad 1 wins for the year were:

    Home:
    (15) Colorado

    Road:
    (44) Arizona

    UCLA's worst losses were:

    Road:
    (101) Washington State
    (78) Stanford

    Neutral-site:
    (91) Oregon State

Their other 6 losses were Quad 1 games against NCAA tournament teams.

Of the two, Michigan State definitely seems to have a higher ceiling. They have high-end wins and their losses are nothing to be embarrassed about.

And, just for the sake of comparison, here's a similar write-up for BYU:

    BYU's Quad 1 wins:

    Road:
    (18) San Diego State
    (39) Utah State
    (62) Saint Mary's

    BYU's worst losses:

    Home:
    (50) Boise State

    Road:
    (110) Pepperdine

Their other 4 losses were Quad 1 games against NCAA tournament teams, three of which were to the #1 overall seed.

All the commentators seem to think Michigan State is going to win against both UCLA and BYU. Jay Bilas in particular seemed to be of the opinion that the statistics don't show how good MSU is.

In the interview CBS had with UCLA's head coach (Cronin?), he talked about how they'd had at least a couple significant injuries during the season and that they've had to adapt the team to compensate. UCLA's kenpom numbers may be inflated because of what they were pre-injury. MSU's kenpom numbers may be deflated because of whatever Bilas is talking about.

I'd like the First Four opponent better if they were having to travel to and from Dayton before the game. As it is, whoever wins that matchup won't have any travel issues, might have already played on the same court as they will against BYU, and will have plenty of time for a turnaround game against BYU.

Obviously, both teams are traditional powers having a rough year. I haven't seen either MSU or UCLA this season, so I don't know their style of play or personnel. No idea how either one matches up against the Cougars. Anyone have a breakdown?
