  • Prediction: Most college basketball analysts were surprised that both of these teams were included in the field, but that doesn’t mean either can’t make a run. BYU probably has more upside, and the Cougars have a bonafide star in Tyler Haws. Can the Rebels slow them down? We doubt it.

We’ll take BYU by a dozen. Marshall Henderson, don’t come after us.

    • Imagine if BYU hadn't gotten in and CSU did instead. Then imagine we end up in this bracket taking CSU's place. Yuck, how depressing, but this is pretty much what it would have looked like. It is never better to go to the NIT instead of the real thing.

Most were surprised that BYU was in? 118 our 136 brackets had us in.

Yeah, I haven't read or heard any surprise or backlash from the media about BYU or Ole Miss. I think everyone recognizes those teams were on the bubble, but UCLA is the one they've been complaining about. The other popular complaint has been about Dayton getting a home game and how unfair that is to Boise State.

Bracket Matrix had Dayton in all 136 brackets with an average seed of 8. No one thought they were even on the bubble.

Yeah, UCLA was the surprise for me. I can't believe they were let in and not with a play-in.

Doesnt' sound like Dayton getting in is the complaint, its playing in Dayton that is the complaint. Didn't they play in the play-in at home within the last 2 years as well?

The Utah State AD's answers on these questions were severely lacking. Should have just moved them up or down a seed to avoid the play-in and the conflict at home.

If you're Boise State and you're the next to last team to get into the tournament you just go with it and be happy you're not playing at home in the Not Important Tournament. Dayton was the last team in, so they couldn't have been moved down unless they don't get in at all. I guess the committee could have pretended they are the 5th to last at large team. They probably could have gotten away with that but then they're still showing preferential treatment to Dayton, only in a different way. It would also be unfair to the team Dayton would be pushing down into a play-in game.

Most BYU fans probably don't remember, but in 1984 before it was against the rules for teams to play at home, BYU as an 8 seed had to play UAB at their place because they were hosting the first and second rounds. BYU won by like 18 points before losing to 1 seed Kentucky in the next round. That was Durrant's senior year and Michael Smith's Freshman year.

                      • This is the first time Dayton has been in the play-in game since they went to 68 teams a few years ago.

Wasn't there some other Ohio team that played there?

Xavier did last year and they lost. Teams play close to home all the time, like Gonzaga this year in Seattle, or Duke and UNC playing somewhere in their home state seemingly almost every year.

BYU has a total of 28 tournament appearances. Utah has fewer. I guess that shouldnt be surprising since BYU also owns the head to head record all time against Utah.

Can we help them fill in the blanks? The 1995 loss was to Tulane, IIRC. Who was the win in 1988 before the loss to Louisville?
