  • Another ESPN Top 100 Mormon?

Damarcus Harrison's (2011) committment to BYU was huge. Many of you are also following the prodigiously talented LDS basketball player from Chicago named Jabari Parker who will be in the class of 2013 and is LDS. Coming on the heals of the 2010 Kyle Collinsworth and the 2009 Tyler Haws, these kids look amazing. The great thing about these kids is that they are talented players who are LDS and therefore BYU is in the game when they wouldn't otherwise be based on level of program.

In the class of 2012 BYU is in the race for top non-member Rosco Allen at Bishop Gorman High. Allen is a Lee Cummard clone but we all know how this goes. These kids are interested in BYU until the heat starts to rise in recruiting. Allen has added a slashing component to his sweet shooting skills and the programs are starting to show up. Now that Allen has offers from some top Pac-10 teams as well as UNLV, I expect his interest in BYU will wane. Despite that, I think BYU is still in the hunt for a wing who could find himself in the ESPN top 100 and who wouldn't shy away from BYU when the big names come around.

Jordan Chatman has quietly become BYU's big target for 2012. IMO, Chatman has replaced Rosco Allen as the #1 target for the Cougs. He is a smooth 6'4" combo guard that has a very savvy and well developed game, long arms, and good skills. Below are a few articles on him:

[ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/basketball/mens/news/story?id=4320930"]2011 PG prospect Cezar Guerrero is showing he has the skills to be a Division I lead guard - ESPN[/ame]

[nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EolWNK0c64"]YouTube - Jordan Chatman Class of 2012 Las Vegas Basketball Highlights[/nomedia]

Chatman has been offered by BYU and will be an excellent recruit. He is currently not as well ranked as Allen but that is more about exposure than anything skill based. Chatman played on a lesser team as a young player and didn't spend a lot of time marketing his skills. He recently changed schools to a basketball power in his area and will have increased exposure going forward. I expect the buzz regarding Jordan to rise and his ESPN score of 92 to become a 95 by the end of his career. He isn't the elite athlete Harrison is but his skill level is very high and he is much longer than his height would suggest. In other words, I think we have another mormon in the ESPN Top 100 coming down the pipe.

If he doesn't come to BYU, I will blame Roger Reid.

          Thanks.

I do really like the future of this team.

At least we have a good shot of these out of state mormons. I don't doubt Utah's recruiting will increase with their new conference, but they still have no chance to land a Mormon kid from Arizona or Washington when he is offered by BYU and other PAC 10 schools.

What amazes me about the current string of talent is the # of quality recruits who are LDS seems to be rising. Haws was a very good recruit as was Davies but neither was as highly touted as Kyle Collinsworth. KC is a very well regarded recruit but not more highly regarded than Harrison. Chatman isn't as highly regarded as Harrison but could rise as high and is likely to be more highly regarded than KC. Parker is at another level completely but Emery (a very likely get for BYU) is going to probably end up at least as well regarded as Haws and probably more like KC. This is a great string of talent. Hopefully it all pans out. The Meads/Pinegar/Dawes (?) class was very well regarded but I don't recall any of them making a splash. Injuries, tempermant, and lack of development really killed them.

Painful to recall how much hype and expectation that group had. They didn't do a damn thing.

What do you think of Jabari Parker landing at BYU with the switch to the WCC?

                  Will that have any effect?

I think they have an out of state Mormon kid BYU offered in their program right now. Kid from Georgia or something like that?

                      Really? No chance?

Utah has a very proud basketball tradition. If Utah starts winning, why wouldn't a kid want to play in SLC for a PAC12 team?

I'm not saying it's going to start raining out of state LDS recruits, but to say that Utah will have "no chance" to land a Mormon kid from out of state seems a bit extreme, no?

I'm curious to see if BYU going to the WCC has any effect on basketball recruiting.

You have to admit that when it comes to Utah and BYU leaving the MWC, Utah's taken a step up in terms of conference prestige and BYU's taken a step down, right?

Regardless, I think Boylen's got his work cut out for him. Switching to a better conference is NOT going to be a magic recipe to rebuild the Runnin' Utes.

I wonder what Majerus could have done with recruiting in the PAC12.

The WCC did not hurt with Damarcus Harrison who is a top 100 kid.

Similar to the Utes saying independence and the Utes to the pac10 was going to kill football recruiting. Yet BYU and Utah have gone head to head twice since the announcement and BYU leads 2-0.

No doubt Utah has taken a step up but, eternal optimist that I am, I see the shift to the WCC as, at worst, a push. The top of the WCC is comparable to the MWC, and BYU will have substantially more national exposure than before. More mothers will be able to see their sons play.

Who are these two. Not challenging you, just curious. The kid today from Alta, is he one?

                              Ryker Matthews and Joe Sampson.

Besides Langi, Matthews is the top player in the state of Utah this year.

Sampson is a safety that had offers from Utah and Oregon among others. JC kid.
