  • There is a unique window on the recruiting trail for the BYU Cougars. Can coach Dave Rose and his staff capitalize on the national level talent that the exists in the Mormon community over the next two classes?

    Five very good players from two classes – 2013 and 2014 – could conceivably comprise a starting five that would be a load to deal with, no matter what conference the Cougars align themselves with.

    So far, Rose has three of the five committed but the final two will prove to be the most difficult. Already commitmented is ESPN 100 PG Nick Emery (Lone Peak, Utah/Lone Peak), junior SG T.J. Haws (Lone Peak, Utah) and senior center Eric Mika (Lone Peak, Utah). The trio plays at the same high school and Haws and Emery watched their brothers play for the Cougars. They were legacy recruits so Rose knew he could lock them up, or at least felt good about his chances.

    To complete the dream class -- including ESPN 100 SF Jabari Parker (Chicago/Simeon) and ESPN 60 PF Payton Dastrup (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) -- Rose will need more than family ties.

    Parker is the best up-and-coming senior, while Dastrup is the second-best recruit out west in the 2014 class. The traffic for Parker reads Duke, Kentucky, Illinois, DePaul, Kansas, North Carolina … you get the picture. For BYU to land him, it would mean Parker put his faith way out in front of his basketball future. It’s conceivable he could be a one-and-done not one, Mormon mission, and return to Salt Lake.

    Should the Cougars not score Parker, they could hit it big with Dastrup, a hybrid 4-man. Dastrup doesn’t have the national name – yet – but there’s little doubt he’s an elite player at his position. Even though Dastrup has been to camp at BYU, the Cougars haven’t, in his mind, made him a priority. They should and we’re guessing they will. Dastrup will play a year and then take his mission.

    At last weekend's Pangos Camp, Dastrup rippled the national waters. A competitor at heart, Dastrup has the tools that make him a dual-threat big man. Not only does he have excellent touch, he's a good athlete for his size. This weekend was a sampling of his talent and it played well on a big stage.

    When’s the last time this much talent came from the Mormon community AND each player filled a different position? Emery the point, Haws the shooting guard, Parker the 3-man, Dastrup the 4 and Mika the 5; that’d be nice. Then again, the trick would be not only signing them but getting Parker back a second year to play with Dastrup while managing the mission goals of each player. It’s not likely to happen and wouldn’t be an easy sell, but if they pull it off ...

    • Whoa! Parker commits to Utah! (Jabari) Parker Van Dyke gave his verbal to Utah last night.

      Didn't see any other chatter about this on CUF yet, and this seemed as good a place as any.

        You had me worried. Sure the Utes can go head to head with us and win some in FB, but I felt safe when it comes to BB.

        • BYU 2013 recruiting class is ranked 9th nationally. That's not even including Jabari.

          • Weird. Is that just because a lot of the top kids haven't committed yet? I can't imagine a class based on those 4 will be that highly ranked once it's all said and done.

              Who are the four?

              • On one hand, Dave Rose gets to be home more. On the other, he's not exactly killing it with the frequent flyer miles. BYU accepted two commitments from kids at the same high school outside of town, ESPN 100 shooting guard Nick Emery and power forward Eric Mika (Highland, Utah/Lone Peak). Rose then went to Idaho and Oklahoma for a pair of forwards in power forward Braiden Shaw (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle) and small forward Jakob Hartsock (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville). Emery highlights the class and will draw lots of comparisons to Jimmer Fredette. When Emery turns into one of the program's best guards in the last decade, remember you heard it here first.
                It's a good group but that ranking looks based mostly on volume and an early top 100 commit right now. BYU has a lot more commits than most others right now. Florida is ranked #10 and only has one commit.

                • How in the world does Dastrup not have an offer from BYU yet? This is just getting ridiculous. ESPN top 25, 4 stars on Scout, offers from AZ, ASU, UC Davis, USC, Utah State and VA, and apparently Kansas made contact with him today.

                  Seriously BYU, this is stupid.

                    I've been wondering the same thing. I don't get it.

                    Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

                      How many LDS kids that Dave Rose wanted did he not get?

                      Simma-on-dow-now! Methinks Rose knows what he is doing.

                        Wherever he goes he just wants to find the right school.

                        • MILWAUKEE -- Nick Emery, Eric Mika and T.J. Haws all play for the Utah Reign travel team and Lone Peak High School in Highland, Utah, but their team chemistry isn't going stop in high school.

                          All three -- Emery, ranked No. 1 in the 2013 class from Utah; Mika, ranked No. 2 in the 2013 class from Utah; Haws ranked No. 1 in the 2014 class from Utah -- have all committed to play for BYU. And if their play at the Under Armour Summer Jam is any indication of how they will play together in college then Cougars fans have good reason to be excited.

                          "We have been playing together since we were in the sixth grade," Mika said.

                          Emery, ranked No. 49 on the ESPN 100, highlights the trio. He is a 6-foot-2 left-handed combo-guard who handles, runs the team, is tough as nails and has NBA range on his jumper.

                          Mika is a true post player (6-9, 220 pounds) who is strong and has a great frame to build upon. He is very physical, area rebounds on both ends and will catch a lob over his defender's head if he falls asleep. Mika can score in the lane thanks to his good hands and soft touch. He seals his defender to make himself a great target and is unselfish enough to screen get a teammate get open. Overall, he has an all-business approach and makes his presence known in the lane.

                          Haws is a 6-4 shooting guard who can knock down the deep 3, is an excellent passer with matching vision and has a great feel for the game.

                          Overall, plenty of firepower in the backcourt and in the low post is on the way to Provo, Utah, and I am looking forward to watching this trio in college.

                            BYU commit Eric Mika is taking somebody in the 2013 Rivals150's spot. Hard not to see him as at least a four star.

                            @EvanDanielsFOX
                            Eric Mika just played his way into the Top 100. Big time effort against Luke Fischer.

                            T.J. Haws is a sick baller. My buddy just said he is a pathological playmaker. No fear

                            Lot of analysts are picking up on Lone Peak's/Utah Reign's Eric Mika at the Summer Jam. #BYU commit with silky post moves

                            @Brady_Ellingson
                            This Utah Reign team is so tough...it's crazy how they all go to the same high school

                            @jerrymeyer247
                            Wow! Liking me some Eric Mika. Legit length, competes, fluid, skilled. BYU commit. Will bulk up and be dangerous

                            @EvanDanielsFOX
                            Eric Mika is a strong low post prospect. He's physical, pursues the ball off the glass and can score some inside. BYU has a good one.

                            @NDkendrick
                            Best team here is playing right now the Utah boys. Watch out for Eric Mika! Think people are slipping on him since he didn't play last yr.

                            @EvanDanielsFOX
                            About to watch one of my favorite AAU teams on the circuit -- Utah Reign! Emery, Haws & Mika...

                                I've seen Lone Peak play a few summer league games. I like Mika because he's a true big man. He's always sitting right on the block. He's got a strong body for his age. He rebounds hard. He's not Hakeem Olajuwon with the ball in his hands, but he has some post moves and can score it. The only issue might be that he might be an inch or two too short to get away with that game in college.
