  • I've really enjoyed the heavy hitters playing each other all pre-season. I hope that's a trend that continues in future seasons. I'd rather lose to another team as good as UConn than play whoever these next two teams are.

This has been the most fun pre-season that I can remember. But I have also been following it closer since BYU is a part of it.

According to goatnapper, we haven't played anyone yet!

When conference play starts on January 2, it's currently projected that BYU's only remaining non-Q1/Q2 games will both be Quad 3 games against the same team - the University of Utah. If Utah's NET rating (currently 147) falls much more (to worse than 160), the home game against them would end up being Quad 4.

Right after the second Utah game, BYU has the following stretches of Quad 1 games:
          • 5 straight
          • 7 out of 8
After that 8-game stretch, they get a Quad 2 reprieve of 3 straight games before finishing up with another Quad 1 against Texas Tech. So the final 12 games of the regular season are all projecting to be Quad 1 or Quad 2.

I am fine if the Utah games drop to Quad 4.

              • Is there a special quad 5 we can put them in. My math major son would roast me for using that term.

Nice that he and Kostic finally played up to expectations in their most most recent games. And those were really strange starts to the halves by BYU. I think they had 5-6 points in the opening five minutes of each half, and then blew the lid off.

When it was 6-2, I asked my daughter if we were watching the pick-up game down at the YMCA. It got better after that.

                          • Looking ahead- BYU's Big 12 Conference Schedule sets up nicely tbh. For home games BYU gets, using today's NET rankings, (4) Arizona, (5) Iowa State, (15) Houston, (26) Texas Tech, (43) UCF, (46) Colorado, (51) ASU, (70) TCU and (Unranked) Utah. On the road BYU plays at (66) KSU, (unranked) Utah, Texas Tech, (16) Kansas, (74) OSU, (65) Baylor, Arizona, (99) West Virginia and (129) Cincinatti -which just brought back its Jizzle. It is obviously a gauntlet but I think it is pretty favorable. BYU ought to be able to win 5-6 of its 9 road games and hopefully at least 8 of its home games. A 14-4 or 13-5 Big 12 record along with a solid performance in the Big 12 tournament would likely get BYU a 2 or 3 seed IMO. There is an average difference in NET rankings of +20 in our home versus away schedule-meaning that on average the teams BYU plays in the Marriott Center are ranked 20 places higher than the teams BYU will play on the road.

The average (mean) current NET rating of BYU's home conference games is 45.8. For the away games, the average current NET rating is 70.1. So the average difference between home opponents and away opponents is 24.3 NET rating positions.

                              • Not to disrupt the AJ Dybantsa year but it appears that Abdullah Ahmed is eligible to play immediately after transferring into BYU from the G-League. I guess it is possible for him to play starting Friday. So I guess we could call this the AJ Dybantsa and Abdullah Ahmed year if we so chose!

Ahmed is coming in as a SO and I guess he will use all his eligibility at the D1 level. I am so touched by his change of heart and sudden love and appreciation for what a good solid education can do for his young life!
