Good grief, there is no reason to believe he would leave in the middle of the season.

Seems like that would hurt his draft stock.

I assume NIL payments are conditioned on the athlete remaining a student in good standing throughout the entire season.

Not an expert, and the competition was pretty meh, but some thoughts.
              • Very aggressive defensively. Don't know if that is new, but very aggressive.
              • Catchings is smooth and deadly on that jump shot, especially from three. He was very good last night.
              • Demin is a superior, confident passer. He hardly shot the ball, so no points, but a good floor general with a tone of assists. Maybe too unselfish?
              • Richie has improved way beyond that scrappy player we love. Still scrappy, but he can also be a featured part of the offense. He was deadly from three last night.
              • Keba doesn't have much of a back to the basket game. Some very nice dunks and blocks on defense.
              • Foos, Dallin, and Trey didn't play and were in sweats. Maybe they were hurt? So Demin started at the point, but don't know if that is the plan.
              • The team shot very well from three. Could be the competition, but much better than last year. Don't know how they finished, but they were over 50% at halftime.
Just a few observations. There is a lot of talent on this team.. CCU ran the clock on most every possession, likely to limit getting blown out even worse, but still we were on pace to maybe get to 100 through halfway through the second half until KY started putting in the walk-ons. Competition was bad, but we beat them like they were bad, which is a good sign. Looking forward to seeing them against better teams.
              Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

              • This is a pretty good look at the game. Honestly it may be better than watching the entire thing against such a bad team. Keita's block at 4:13 is pretty impressive. Must've gone 4 rows into the crowd.

Good summary. I thought they were rusty for the first 8 minutes and then very very good. Although it's obviously hard to make any real judgements against a D2 team. I thought it was strange that Hall didn't start/play and Fous didn't play. I have not heard about any injuries so I'm wondering if it was about getting everyone including the newcomers and people like Baker who was out last year some minutes together before the games count. The Demin to Catchings lob/dunk on the first play was so pretty and effortless it brought a tear to my eye. This team is going to be so fun to watch and if they gel they will be very dangerous against anyone. I saw they finished exactly 50% from 3. I wish we could have that as the season average.

I left at halftime because I'm old and tired and didn't want to get stuck in any traffic. But I was too curious to stay away completely. Looking forward to seeing as many full games as I can this season.

I saw Foos, Hall, and Trey in sweats in the bench area, so they didn't look hurt, so who knows. Baker looked pretty good as well. Dude is a scorer.

Who knows, but I didn't see anyone successfully penetrate to the basket, except for Richie using his "awkward but successful" style and Baker who had a nice drive through the lane for a layup. Maybe CCu was packing it in, which led to our success from the three line.

We were tempted to leave at halftime, but stayed until 5 minutes to go, which worked out very well in avoiding traffic. People stuck around. Looked about 3/4 full, maybe more. Hard to judge.

. And thanks for sparing me the "Hack!" accusation, justified though it would have been.

                        • I'm back with my BYU basketball box score analysis!! I'm thinking of tweaking my formula for this season. The first box score is how I calculated my PER last season. The second one is with the tweaks: less points for assists (it was on the same level as a steal and a basket, so just lowering it a bit), slightly less negative points for missed FGs, slightly more points for OR, slightly less points for DR. It's no real surprise that Demin drops from first to third in my tweaked formula since assists are worth less points. Baker looked really good in the second half highlights that I watched, but his 3 TOs really hurt him. He also got the lowest Defensive Rating for anyone who played 15+ minutes. Enjoy!
