It's funny that all of these liberals / progressives that screech Trump is the next Hitler are now so willing to give up their 2d amendment rights. If Trump were truly a budding tyrant, then they should be more supportive than ever of the 2d amendment. And don't forget, the Nazis came to power, reviewed the gun registration logs and began confiscating firearms, particularly from the Jews and political enemies / enemies of the state. Authoritarian governments prefer defenseless, pacified populaces. So much easier to control.

That was a good read. Congressman Gowdy also made this point (starting around the 2:30 mark):

We already have controls on what kind of guns you can have, where you can have them, when you can use them and what individuals can possess even a single bullet. So the question to me is whether or not current controls are adequate and there are two fundamental questions that you should put your finger on: What law had it existed at the time would have prevented this mass killing or another mass killing. Very nicely done, Solon. I often wonder about the "well-regulated militia" introductory clause. If I were a member of the National Guard (which I presume is the only regulated militia currently, but someone please correct me on this), I would be required to use whatever weapons my commanding officers dictated, and that I wouldn't be allowed to provide my own weaponry.

You are correct--the National Guard is the regulated militia. You are also correct that the commander dictates what weapons their soldiers can use. There is a provision for the commander to allow personal weapons, but I've never seen that allowed. The National Guard derives its lineage from the Minutemen who used their own weapons.

One of the great things about each state having a militia is that it provides a check against the power of the federal standing army. In the National Guard, citizens are the Army.

As we become more and more urban, the regulators may eventually win. Although a high number of firearms exist, the percentage of persons acquiring them is declining. Once that percentage declines significantly, the regulators will win. For them, Lady Liberty is just a mascot.

Urbanization will be what turns the tide on the 2nd amendment. Currently, the electoral college gives the rural a larger voice to fight the concentrated urban political power. But there will be a tipping point. The Supreme Court has essentially ruled that the 2nd amendment provides individuals the right to bear arms. It is an individual right. This is as established as Roe v Wade.

I do wonder what percentage of gun control advocates really desire to do away with the 2nd amendment. I'm sure plenty fail to realize that the biggest obstacle they have with "common sense gun laws" is the constitution. You cannot take away the rights of a citizen. Maybe with enough urbanization, they can repeal the 2nd amendment. All it takes is 2/3 of congress and a POTUS with the desire to get rid of it. Then have the legislatures of 38 states ratify it. Not in my lifetime.
