We live an hour away and have tomorrow off. I just looked at their calendar. They have the schedule that we are switching to next year. Regular classes on Lincoln's bday and then get all of the following week off. A second spring break. Pretty sweet gig.

So they've been dumping water like crazy over the main, damaged spillway (that I shared pictures of on Friday) to try to rapidly lower the lake level.

It has been about 3 hours since the evacuation orders went into effect. The lake level has lowered over a foot and is now only about 6 inches above the emergency spillway that had developed a hole in it.

Once the lake level drops below the emergency spillway level the threat of catastrophic failure will be much better. They are taking about bringing large boulders and rocks by helicopter to try to plug the hole in the emergency spillway. If that doesn't work they may bring a bunch of schoolchildren in to plug the holes in the dam with their fingers, I guess.

The main spillway is getting blasted by 100,000 CFS of water right now. I can't imagine what condition it is going to be in once they can finally back off on the flow rate and inspect the thing.

It's pretty crazy how things have transpired this week. On Friday they assured everyone that everything was fine. Yet, they cancelled school throughout most of Oroville on Friday, based on inclement weather when there wasn't a cloud in the sky anywhere.

It's only 2nd largest reservoir in California so it may not be that bad.

The Butte County Sheriff’ Office released the following statement on Facebook:

    This is an evacuation order.

Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered.

A hazardous situation is developing with the Oroville Dam auxiliary spillway. Operation of the auxiliary spillway has lead to severe erosion that could lead to a failure of the structure. Failure of the auxiliary spillway structure will result in an uncontrolled release of flood waters from Lake Oroville. In response to this developing situation, DWR is increasing water releases to 100,000 cubic feet per second.

Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered.

This in NOT A Drill. This in NOT A Drill. This in NOT A Drill.

I have been visiting Northern Cal this week... I am happy to report their drought is over:

I should have rented a boat.

Channel 5 indicated Alta has the most snow depth in 52 years. I can't remember what they were saying about water content and cold temperatures exactly, but they were using terms such as not in 4 and 8 years. More evidence climate change is real.
