  • Time photo documentary on domestic violence

Did anyone see this photo documentary that was recently posted on Time.com?

It started out as a photo story about an Ohio (Thanks, Dayton!) man that was trying to turn his life around after serving time in prison.

What turned out was something much different, as the photo journalist was witness to a terrifying scene at the house. Rather than react to the situation, she continued documenting and came up with a compelling story.

Here is the link to the story.

Some of the pictures are just heartbreaking.

Wow. That's a tough article to read. I hope she finds some peace now.

I can't think of the right word to describe the photo essay. Interesting? Intriguing? Devastating?

I can't insert the photo, for some reason. I can't take my eye off the raw anger shown in this picture

The picture of the little girl getting between them was devastating. Is there any hope for that little boy and girl?

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

That guy is an ass. I hope the woman has the courage and strength to take her children and get as far away from him as possible.

If like to say I hope so. I was a similar child to those in the picture, except my siblings were all out of the house. I was in the middle of many acts similar to those pictured. The only two times that I remember the police coming involved a neighbor seeing something that was or could be considered a weapon. Fortunately at about age 7, my father decided to leave and that mostly ended the situation.

The youth leaders of my adolescence were truly gifts of God that changed my life and a couple of good friends dads. Luckily I was able to see that there were other ways to act and treat people. Hopefully those kids find someone that can change their world view.

We are friends with a married couple. They were both abused for a significant period in their youth. They developed a dependent relationship with each other, and ended up getting married young. They have had a rough time together, and they almost got divorced. And they display immature personality traits from time to time, such as the public need for attention. But they are moderately successful in their shared profession, and are responsible citizens. They have also spent a good deal of their time together as foster parents, trying to help kids who were in similar situations as themselves. They even adopted one of them.

I relate this with a hope for people like Maggie. They are already dealing with suboptimal 'mental skill sets', and are usually dependent on some type of chemical. But if there's a true desire for change, an outstretched hand may make the difference. People like her will probably always have problems dealing with life, and they may return to destructive habits more than once. We can only hope their overall trajectory is positive.
