  • The electric vehicle graveyard

So Fisker filed for bankruptcy this week and Lordstown filed a while back. Lucid is hanging on by a thread and Rivian would like be bankrupt if they didn't have the Amazon contract. It seems like the only electric vehicle manufacturer that is going to survive is Tesla, thanks to it being the first to mass market and the fact that its car line up doesn't suck. If I were to pick another company that might make it, I'd pick Rivian mostly because Amazon owns 16% of them and will likely subsidize them until they are profitable...or maybe they ditch the consumer market all together and decide to just make delivery vehicles.

Anyway, I was looking at the Rivian SUV (not seriously) but the insane price tag and the restrictions of the electrical range turned me off, not to mention the threat of them going bankrupt and thus the warranty becoming non-existent. I commute three days a week and my roundtrip to work and back is almost 60 miles, so I'd love to get an electric vehicle but MJs car is a very, very small car that barely fits four small people and is not a good car for road tripping. So my car has to double as the commuter car and the road trip car and an electric vehicle does not fit into those two categories.

Anyone here drive a fully electric vehicle?

Quite a few Rivians in Provo. A couple in my ward.

We were at a light behind a Rivian SUV the other day and when the light turned green he floored it. I was stunned by how fast that thing was for a decent-sized SUV.

They are great machines and I'd totally get one if we didn't make frequent road trips that require driving 1,000 miles through vast deserts (west Texas and the panhandle). You can also get a fully loaded GMC Denali for the price of the R1S.

If they can ever figure out the range issue, then I'd love to get one. Our old Suburban could go 600+ miles on a full tank and it took 5 minutes to fill up. Most EVs are getting around 200 miles on a full charge and they take 20-30 minutes of supercharging to get back to 80%.

If Slim ever returns after his drive-by, I’m pretty sure he got a Rivian.

I seriously considered a Rivian for awhile. I'm amazed at how many I see in Bend (100K population).

If they survive I would think about getting one for my next vehicle.

I have three close friends that each bought Rivians. 2 trucks (pre-orders) and one SUV. They are all nice, fast, comfortable, etc. Headlights are dumb, but whatever. No idea if they will make it, but getting them repaired locally has already been a massive hassle for these guys.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

              We’ve owned a 3 - X - X.

The range anxiety convo is hilarious, anyone over 45 when asking about our EVs always cites range anxiety, lol.

An EV usually is only useful in town as a daily commuter and road tripping within 150 mile range, that’s it.

Anything longer than 150 miles requires a gas fueled vehicle.

I tell people buy the EV for your do everything around town car, save the mileage on your other gas powered vehicle for long road trips.

The only way to go fully electric is to rent vehicles (which isn’t a horrible idea) for long road trips.

Quality control on Teslas suck, like legit suck. We haven’t had a major issue on any of ours but lines never line up, interiors feel cheap, and we’ve had to get our doors fixed a few times. They are super fun to drive.

Id say walk into a 3 or Y, they are so cheap right now, and if you love it graduate to a S or X.

Interesting on the repair issues. Living in Houston I don't think about that much. I jus tchecked and there are 4 collision repair shops in Houston on Rivian's website that are certified to work on Rivian's. That not many but at least they are there.

Out of all the other EV-only auto makers, Rivian has to have the best chance of making it (not including Tesla who is definitely making it). That's why I'd buy from them over all these other boutique companies. They still lose a lot of money on each car they sell but they might get to the scale they need to survive. They also seemed to realize that EV cars are a luxury item right now and have almost ignored cost and made a really good (but expensive) product.

We have 2 electric vehicles. A Hyundai Ioniq 6 and a Genesis Electrified GV70.

I got the Ioniq 6 because with my work being Leads certified, it has charging stalls, so I haven't paid for charging this last year.

My wife got the Genesis a few months ago. Her biggest motivation was the fact that she hates gassing up her car.

So far, they have been great!

We went with the Hyundai/Kia/Genesis cars because, besides Porche, they are the only ones that use the 800 V system that allows for quick charging.

My car can charge in 18 minutes (with the right DC chargers. The ones at work are SLOW, but I have all day there).

We still have 2 ICEs if we need them.

I don't think EV's will reach mainstream until (if) they are able to figure out the solid-state batteries that have the range of ~700 miles. If they are able to get over that hump, I don't see how ICEs survive outside of niche areas, kind of like manual transmissions.

I want to buy an EV, but I can't justify another vehicle right now.

Yep. Electric car acceleration is amazing. I rarely punch it, but it is great when I do.

who is not flying anywhere farther away than 300 miles? what a waste of time. but also rejecting the internal combustion engine is the first step to effete communist sympathizing. give me 10mpg v8 or give me death.

The Tesla X was the fastest car I've ever driven. Scary how quickly it gets up to highway speed.

I find myself going back and forth between Denver and SLC a lot. At eight hours to drive versus about four or five hours from leaving to go to the airport to reaching the destination, driving is just a touch less convenient than flying. If I am on my own, I'll fly, but if I have my family in tow as I often do, we'll just drive.

I would consider an EV for daily commuting, but with frequent ski trips we'd need at least one ICE or hybrid. As it is, both our cars are hybrids now.

A year or two ago, DDD let me drive his Tesla Model S Plaid. Zero to 60 in 1.8 seconds. I seriously almost blacked out. I was nauseous the rest of the night.
