  • China Traffic Jam Could Last Weeks

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...share_facebook
BEIJING—A 62-mile traffic jam near the Chinese capital that officials say could last until mid-September has become a symbol of the dark side of China's love affair with the automobile.

Officials say traffic has been snarled along the outskirts of Beijing and is stretching toward the border of Inner Mongolia ever since roadwork on the Beijing-Tibet Highway started Aug. 13. The following week, parts of a major road circling Beijing were closed, further tightening overburdened roadways.

As the jam on the highway, also known as National Highway 110, passed the 10-day mark Tuesday, local authorities dispatched hundreds of police to keep order and to reroute cars and trucks carrying essential supplies, such as food or flammables, around the main bottleneck. There, vehicles were inching along little more than a third of a mile a day. Zhang Minghai, director of Zhangjiakou city's Traffic Management Bureau general office, said in a telephone interview he didn't expect the situation to return to normal until around Sept. 17 when road construction is scheduled to be finished and traffic lanes will open up.
Honey, I'll be a little late tonight... How late? 3 weeks is what they're saying.

Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

It sounds more like a slum that invaded a junkyard. Maybe this is a creative way to define poverty out of existence.
        PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Who is going to feed the people and re-fuel their cars? This traffic jam is about to turn into a body-strewn pick-n-pull.

We got caught in a traffic jam in Germany once that went from Munich to half way between Ingolstadt and Nuremberg, about 70 miles. It didn't take 3 weeks to clear though - about 4-5 hours and an extra 3 hrs to get to Munich. It is hard to believe that it will take that long to get everybody off the highway.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Dear God in Heaven: Forgive me my sins, for I have been to China and I have had bad thoughts. Forgive me, Heavenly Father, for I have cast an envious eye on the authoritarian Chinese political system, where leaders can, and do, just order that problems be solved. . . . I cannot help but feel a tinge of jealousy at China’s ability to be serious about its problems and actually do things that are tough and require taking things away from people. Dear Lord, please accept my expression of remorse for harboring such feelings. Amen.

This is the funny part to me about all the talk concerning "economic behemoth China." That country is a mess with a lot of potential. No one knows if the potential will ever be realized yet we still get story after story (usually written by those who have never been to China or have only been to Shanghai and Beijing) about how their economy will be bigger than the US economy in the next 40 years. In my experience, they have a long way to go just to feed their people.

Can you imagine the $ the Louisiana HP could have made during the Katrina exodus? All of those cars going under the minimum speed limit....

One of China's problem is that they have few railroads so everything is shipped by truck. Railroads still play a major role in US industrial shipping. Pound per mile, they are still a cheaper way to ship.

This is indicative of the type of "growth" China has experienced -- apart from a few showstopper projects, it's mainly crap that in 10 years will be crumbling. If the secret of capitalism is creative destruction, then what do you call it when the whole edifice crumbles under the weight of its own fake marble columns?
