The ONLY way we are gong to solve the world's energy and environmental issues (including global warming) is via scientific research and engineering. And this ONLY occurs in wealthy, highly educated countries with stable economies. So yes, global economic concerns are critically important.

"ONLY" in caps? Spoken like an engineer from a wealthy, highly educated country with a stable economy. The wealthy, highly educated country in which I live still has half the population who thinks climate change is a hoax. So much for wealth and education. What else do you have?

Lol. OK. Somebody notify the research labs working on nuclear fusion to give up because "half the population" thinks climate change is a hoax.

At some point in the future, people will consider Idiocracy to be a documentary.

Before you get too condescending, note that I am not the one who believes that Man's Search for Happiness is a documentary.

That was a comment about population decline in developing countries. Maybe you haven't seen the movie.

A recent The Dispatch podcast addressed the population issue in China. It noted that all advanced nations with women having greater access to education and entering the work force in large numbers are experiencing population declines or stagnation, with the resultant economic declines. The U.S. has been avoiding that problem by immigration (please no memes, Ted). To maintain a vibrant U.S. economy, encouraging immigration will be essential. Sure, we should provide for stricter border enforcement, but greater attention must be given to promoting lawful entries.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I’m doing my part! And in the process I am making China and Iran just a little bit dumber. Win-win.

How many jobs are being phased out due to automation and robotics? Of course to me, it seems those jobs will be disproportionately unskilled jobs.

Quite a few, I am sure. Particularly in the auto industry. But an ongoing concern/complaint of foreign firms that have invested in opening greenfield manufacturing plants in the U.S. is about the difficulty in finding labor resources, particularly of the skilled variety. Firms often team with local schools to provide training in order to build that supply chain.

I still remember a time when immigration reform was a bipartisan issue.
You got assholes lamenting white people being replaced by brown people as if skin color makes you American or not.

I know, it's crazy. Everybody knows that being Christian is what makes you American.
