The american public won't be happy when they find out that most of it went to European Banks - that The Fed is the world's one-stop-shopping HQ for bailout money.
My guess is that Mr Geithner assumes he won't really have anything to worry about if we don't actually find out until 2018. I just hope there are no other long-term strings tied to the AIG bailout - or things might end-up like when Michael Scott promised to send all the HS graduates of that elementary school to college...
But I absolutely think the Fed did the right thing in paying out AIG's obligations. The Euros would have been in deep deep trouble had AIG's default "insurance" not paid out. But I still find it aggravating that the US taxpayer is funding risky European banking regulation policies...
