This story and, especially, these images really drive home to me just how foreign the world of the Ancient Near East and the Bible is to me and to modern society, no matter how much we like to pretend to be the spiritual descendants of Moses et al. After all, the Old Testament requires this punishment for adulterers, wizards, sabbath-breakers, homosexuals, etc.
