Painting a Cargo Dresser

This has got to be a softball for you handy-types. I have an old cargo dresser that I'm thinking about painting.

The questions:

Do I need to sand it?

Do I need to prime it?

Let's start there.

DNF, I have been refinishing some furniture too. I would suggest you sand it just to scuff it up, you don't need to take off all the stain.

As far as paint goes. Go to a real paint store (Duron, Sherwin Williams, Pittsburgh Paint to name a few) and buy some high gloss oil based primer and paint. Latex paint cannot offer anything close to the same finish as oil based paint. If you don't believe me take a block of wood to any of those paint stores and ask them to spread a few drops on it. Do the same with a latex high gloss and you'll see the difference when they dry. It's amazing. Your brush strokes will not show and it will look almost like an original finish, provided you put it on evenly. I did a crib and a dresser in white and I sampled all three of the above brands. I like the Duron primer, and Pittsburgh Paint had the brightest white. Duron's white dries slightly off white and Sherwin's has a very slight bluish tint to it. Pittsburgh Paint is the clearest out there.

Whatever you do (and this goes for anyone repainting a piece of furniture) do not use latex paint. Walls and furniture are not the same and neither is the paint that should be used on them. Oh, and if you put a second coat on make sure to lightly sand it (no less than 320 grit) and let it dry for 24 hours between coats.

Cargo pants are definitely not in style for anyone over the age of 12 (military uniforms excepted). They probably even remained fashionably acceptable for a few years longer than they should have due to the fact that cargo shorts were so popular. But we're a full 15 years removed from their heyday (i owned a pair from A&F in 1998, pre mission). Mos def not something anyone should be rocking anymore.

My favorite cargo-pants faux pas story the guy in my ward during my first year of law school. He had a pair of black cargo slacks he bought in Germany while on his mission. He would wear them to church every week with his black wingtip Doc Martens (sometimes with a sportcoat and tie). Yikes!
